Did they ever explain why Shelley was like that?

I'm sorry if I've missed something in the first season, but did they ever explain why Shelley was deformed? Tall? Glowing? Mute?

She died and was reanimated by Dr Pryce. Norman asked him to do the same with Letha. They never gave a full explanation of the "side effects" you mentioned.

Pryce frequently mentioned that his experiments were a risk and the results wouldn't always come out as expected. So a physical deformity must've happened during the process as assumed.

In episode five Dr. Pyre talks about his "reincarnation through chemistry" research and mentions phosphorus. That would explain the glowing.
