that's actually kind of a plothole. the only index they had was that someone saw him talking to the child.
yeah, i agree, but the tongue in cheek humor is totally inapropriate. let's not forget that the story is about a childrapist that also tortures and dismembers their victims and presents them then outside for their parents to find them, soooo.
if you liked prisoners (which i thought was utter crap), please check out "the tortured". it is a gazillion times better.

Thanks for the reply! I do remember a scene where he is watching the little ballet dancers, one of which I believe turns out to be the cops daughter.
I agree, the humor did not fit in at all. Like when the father and the cop are bonding while torturing the guy. Or, when the Palestinian guy on the horse accuses the cop(who I assume is an Israeli) of thinking all Palestinians are barbarians who would not have an iPhone? Weird...
Ya know, I didn't know quite what to make of Prisoners. It was also a bit strange, I did not hate it, but I can't say I thought it was great or anything. It was well made in terms of cinematography and direction.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will be checking out "The Tortured!"
~ I would like to encourage everyone to watch Curse 2: The Bite. It is made of awesomeness.
totally. the thing is that i would not mind said humorous aspects if it wasn't in this context. if this was your usual off-the-mill reservoir dogs/pulp fiction/thursday/ lock stock smoking barrell copy then i would not even mind, but it is the said subject matter that in my eyes forbids any humorous notion.
as for prisoners, i kinda liked it at the start, especially with some of my favorite actors involved, but this went downhill pretty fast. i don't know if you saw "the tortured", but prisoners has a huge amount of similarities, but just does not cut to the chase. the thing i don't like about prisoners is, that it tries to have some kind of philosophical relevance, which is not really there. yes, we understand that the name "prisoners" is also meant metaphorical, but those are some weak metaphors. also i found the story of the whole case totally ridiculous. i mean the maze thing, drugging the kids and then driving them insane with false hopes ..etc. i could go on for a while.
i totally agree. the cinematography was second to none, though.
if you haven't seen "the tortured" yet, please check it out. it is a great movie. as well in comparison as well as on it's on terms. be warned though, it is way more violent and graphic than prisoners and BBB. it has a much greater impact and the makers had a clear vision what they wanted to do and what they were trying to say and boy oh boy, they went through with it.

I don't think it matters why they thought he was guilty. We were thrown in at the end of the killing spree and don't know what happened earlier and what evidence the police may have gathered against him during their investigation.
But the fact we weren't told why they thought he was guilty worked because it left us unsure until the end whether he really was the killer. Had we known for sure that he was guilty, I don't think it would have been anywhere near as interesting.
Big spoiler
Saying that though, I did guess that he was guilty halfway through. I suspected there was more to what we saw at the ballet lesson and afterwards, and that it was the cop's daughter in his apartment and not his own. This was confirmed once we find out the killer put sedatives in cake he fed to his victims.
Another poster pointed out that the father came back, and said "I'll make this quick" as he was about to saw off the guy's head. This implies that he got what he was looking for (at the beginning he said, once he hears the actual location the torturing will stop). I thought the camera was clear in showing that the hole was empty, but maybe not
It makes sense to assume he did find the head, because that would explain why he was so sure he was killing the right person
After first describing the killer's OM, including:
"He'd saw off their heads with a saw so rusty that in some cases he'd switch to a less rusty saw to complete the task."
Here's what the father said to the killer:
"I'm going to do to you all the things you did to those poor girls, finger by finger, toenail by toenail until your head rolls onto the floor.
But, I'm willing to give you a quicker death.
That's why my Glock is here.
Under one condition...
That you tell me where you buried my daughter's head."
IOW if he did not confess (where the head was hidden) he would get his head chopped off. If he DID confess to the whereabouts he would be killed quickly with a bullet.
well, yeah even the kids in the class he was teaching was aware of his alleged crimes, so for him to keep teaching was freaking wrong on so many levels.
"The twist ending is "cute" and turns the hate back on the haters, on the torturers, an ironic moral. They too, it turns out, are the "wolves," no better than their prisoner."
while i agree to some extend to your post, that part is pure BS.
a) motivation: the killer does what he does for his own joy. that does not count for the attackers. revenge is a natural instinct. rape, torture, pedophilia and dismemberment are not. b) all they wanted was revenge. if he admitted right at the beginning, that would have meant 1 simple murder against the mass of unbelievable acts against mankind that the killer did. doesn't compare. c) the killer was eventually stopped from continuing.
so, no. it does not compare.

"whose own depravity ultimately killed another child"
wrong. even if the detective would have left the guy physically unharmed and would have used real police work, that does not guarantee that his child would not have been next.
also, his child was taken hostage at the dance school. in reality police would have found out who took her in an instance and then search the house properly, instead just one copper taking a 30 second peak.
"It might be argued that the child killer was a victim of psychological illness"
that way you can excuse EVERY crime.
