Do hikers take that many breaks?

I thought the point of a trek was to start at the start of the trail and not stop until you get to the end of the trail. But Cheryl here was stopping in motels, getting rides in cars, having meals in folks homes, eating in restaurants, buying perfume. Isn’t that kind of cheaty?

No. You do what you want when you want. There's no rules.
Plus I think part of the plot of the movie is to watch he grow up and become
more single-minded and guided, so they have to show her the opposite at first.
I thought this was a pretty decent movie.

Movie is good! I just don’t understand the rules of saying you’ve hiked a trail. I guess I could hike this thing too if I hiked a few days, then took a few months off, then go back to that point where I left off and hike it some more, then take a year off, then go back, etc. It might take a decade but would I be able to say “I hiked the PCT” if I did it like that?

OK. Sounds like you understand the rules pretty well, but you don't like them or agree with them? So, in that case, when you go hike a trail, do it sequentially and all at once. Problem solved.
