At the beginning of the movie the little girl Emma said she saw a scary man.
I missed something here. Who was Emma and who was the scary man she saw? Was this a scene in the past and Emma then grew up and became some character later, and was the scary man SLJ?

The scary man was the sex offender who was killed at the start. SLJ got him with the hammer right before the her mum came and that was why the blood was on the rock. There was a brief flashback to what happened in a reveal when SLJ explained his vigilantism
