Another movie where the back story makes zero sense

The Hunger Games is the worst example of this. Panem has the tech to make hard light holograms (mutt-tations), force fields and maglev trains, but they need coal from District 12 for some reason? Its like the Capital exists solely to be the bad guys.

This movie is another. The Others have the tech to cause tsunamis, genetically engineer viruses and EMP the entire planet in one shot. Yet they go into a long involved process of capturing, brainwashing and deploying children to kill the rest of the population? Why wouldn't they just engineer another 3 or 4 diseases that bugs and birds can spread?

Even if the background doesn't really matter that much since it's an excuse to have the story wee are watching unfold, these are some really lazy examples in world-building.

Yeah sometimes suspension of disbelief only goes so far...I was drunk/half asleep watching this yet the whole time could not stop thinking, "These aliens are like gods....why is the 5th wave the most asinine, time consuming, and risky? Just throw another plague at us!"

reply

Becuase they wanted to play with us like toys. Like a cat playing with a mouse that is almost dead.

reply

Funny. That's exactly one of the questions the characters ask in the books. It gets answered in third book.

What is it? The answer? If they address it, great.

Goal of the Others wasn't to kill all humans or conquer Earth. Their goal was to save humanity and Earth from humans. By killing almost all humans, putting them back to the stone age and making humans very suspicious of each other, so that they won't start working together again anytime soon.

Main goal of their attacks was to attack against two of our main strengths: technology and teamwork.

Cool. That's an interesting idea.
