Awesome movie!

Just re-watched this and it was as enjoyable as the first time. LOL at all the idiots giving this a 1 or 2 star rating in IMDb, after writing huge essays where they pick apart every single illogical plot hole and fail to see the forest for the trees.

Gerard Butler may not be the greatest thespian ever, but he's awesome in these kinda roles and owned it. 9/10 action movie - recommend you switch off your brain and just enjoy the rush.

Also, OHF is vastly superior to White House Down.

I avoided this one for a while because I thought it would be shitty, but you're right, it's actually pretty awesome. I finally got around to watching it about a year ago and enjoyed it immensely. It's Die Hard in the White House and is executed quite well.

As you say, Gerard Butler does a great job in these films. He's great as the action hero and I actually wish he had done MORE action movies in his career. Don't be deceived about his acting abilities, though. I recently watched him in a little indie thriller called The Vanishing and his performance is excellent.

It's a shame London Has Fallen didn't quite live up to OHF. Did you see that one?

reply

Cool man! Yeah, he was great in the Vanishing and I never really found him wanting as an actor. He was just typecast in these tough SOB marine / cop roles mostly, but not complaining because I think they suit him damn well! I think he's a better action hero than guys like Liam Neeson (who was great in the first Taken, but looked old and tired in the later sequels and movies) and this movie alone was on par, if not better than, classics like Die Hard.

I have seen London has fallen, but only once, when it first came out and I was baked af haha! Don't remember it much, so gonna give it a re-watch soon.

Another thing I love about this movie is that there is no forced SJW propaganda that seems to be nauseatingly shoehorned into nearly every movie that comes out nowadays :( Just a good ol' fashioned alpha male kicking ass flick with a simple plot line that's easy to enjoy.

reply

Agreed on the SJW shit. One thing that struck me was that this is a surprisingly patriotic film, and I loved that. America gets attacked and then kicks the shit out of the assholes who were dumb enough to do it. In this day and age, its rare for Hollywood to give us a film like that. OHF really is a throwback to the action movies of the 80s and 90s, which is awesome.

It really was very refreshing. Even my 60-something parents enjoyed it.

London Has Fallen was okay--a decent watch if you just want an action fix--but could've been better. It was still nice to get a sequel though.

Speaking of sequels, did you know a third film is on the way? I'm a little iffy on the trailer, but fuck it, I'm down to see Gerard Butler take on this character again and kick some more ass.

I am in NZ, but most of my family live in the US and they're Americans. We all love the country (and Trump)! I think the anti-American stance & SJW propaganda has gone up quite a few notches since the Nov 2016 election, esp. with so many morons in Hollywood (many of whom were my fav actors and actresses) just blindly spewing hate out of desperation. It's gonna be a blast to watch the Don get re-elected next year and have the left go into nuclear meltdown lol!

And if there's a sequel for this, I'll gladly watch it. GB has been making a lot of good action movies since this one, incl. Den of Thieves (underrated as hell), Geostorm and Hunter Killer.

reply

Cool, well NZ is one of our great allies, so we're all on the same team!

And yeah, agreed on Trump. He got my vote once; he'll get it again.

It really is a shame that Hollywood has just gone off the deep end when it comes to modern leftist SJW culture. I remember a time when actors and directors mostly kept their political opinions quiet because they wanted to entertain everyone and didn't want their politics getting in the way of that. Obviously things have changed now, and while I try to overlook it when someone like Matt Damon says something stupid, it can be difficult.

And I agree on Gerard's movies lately. Den of Thieves was great. Geostorm wasn't exactly great, but I had fun with it. Same with Hunter Killer.

Did you see the YouTube link I posted for the trailer to Angel Has Fallen?

reply

Yeah, looks a bit cheesy and similar to Mark Wahlberg's Shooter, but I'll still watch it. Something about an 80s/90s styled action flick with lots of ass kicking and cheesy dialogue just appeals to me lol.

I see Den of Thieves is also getting a sequel - hopefully it's just more of the same as the first one and not too different and bad.

Think I'm gonna watch 300 now lol - my fav GB action flick ever!

reply

Yeah, hopefully AHF will be good. We'll see. So far the franchise has one really good movie and one so-so movie. Fingers crossed that the new one is closer to OHF on that spectrum.

I heard about Den of Thieves getting a sequel. That's good. For the life of me, I have no idea why the first one only has a 42% on RT. I know the critics can be unpredictable, but it's a legitimately well-made film!

Enjoy 300. If you never saw Gods of Egypt, you might want to check it out. It got a rather chilly reception from both critics AND audiences, but I thought it was a fun movie.

I'm looking at his upcoming projects on IMDB and two of them that we haven't mentioned--Greenland and Afterburn--sound like they might deliver the kind of action that we both apparently like.

Exactly.
