Am I the only person that loved this movie?

Seriously, I thought it was great. Who cares if it's not realistic, who cares if it has a couple little plot holes here and there? It's an amazing movie with a tremendous use of visual effects. What's with people these days immediately hating a movie just because the movie portrays a sequence of events that are unlikely to happen? I swear you must all be a boring bunch of people. I see comments like "What a piece of *beep* that could never happen!" and I'm just like... that's the point. If people only filmed *beep* that's going to happen we wouldn't have half the great movies we have today.

I had an awesome argument prepared when I started this subject, but forgot it before I started typing :/. You get the point though.

I liked it,good action flick.

"Because of my big legs and my karate, I can do the splits......Noo...Prroblemm"

I liked it too, good action flick, and I thought Gerard Butler's fight scenes were very good. I enjoyed the concept that the white house was not being protected by whatever security and military options they had, but one dedicated man could sneak around and wreck the plans of some very sophisticated terrorists. If you want to talk about phony CGI blood, etc, you should watch the fight scenes in Django Unchained.LOL I thought it was realistic and especially liked the interaction between Banning and Forbes, and Banning and Kang.

reply

Nope, I loved it too, I preferred White House Down, but I still loved this.

Why? Simple really, I have this remarkable ability that most people seem to lack and that's being able to appreciate a film for what it is. This was never going to be a deep, intense, cerebral thriller, it's just an action movie. There's a reason why they exist, to sit back, put your feet up and chill out watching a dumb, fun movie.

I really will never understand why so many people can't do that. I'm all for smart, action heavy thrillers, but that doesn't preclude my ability to enjoy a film like this either. Some movies are just meant to be fun spectacle and nothing more, there's nothing wrong with that.

For everyone complaining about it not being realistic or being too unbelievable, IT'S AN ACTION MOVIE ABOUT A TERRORIST ATTACK ON THE WHITE HOUSE, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?!! Seriously people, get a bloody clue, what you're doing is complaining because an action movie is an action movie.

Y'know what one of my favourite movies is? Die Hard. Everyone loves Die Hard because it's a great, fun movie. It's also an action movie, and frankly one of the stupidest, most unrealistic plots ever put to film, but it doesn't matter because it's MEANT TO BE THAT WAY because it's MEANT TO BE SILLY FUN.

One thing I've learned over the years though is never to judge the true public opinion of a film, particularly something like this, on the general reaction from the IMDb membership, they're about 90% narrow minded, idiot film snobs with their noses jammed so far up their asses they gnaw their own rib cages. There a plenty of people who post in this place who are reasonable people, and plenty who enjoy movies like this for what they are, but will just happen to not like this film, that's cool, that's their personal taste and that's fine, because at least they appreciate the film for what it is, even if they don't like it. Most people though, they don't appreciate it at all and they act as if it is a crime or a sin to be happy to sit back and enjoy something like this.

I enjoyed this movie very much as well. Isn't "realism" and "movie" an oxymoron? We're there to be entertained with movies in my opinion. Otherwise, make a documentary about the subject and get it on PBS or the History channel.

As Amy Farrah Fowler pointed out the plot hole on a recent Big Bang Theory with Indiana Jones and the Nazi's...
It does not matter; I still loved the entertainment aspect of the Indiana Jones series.

Another series I love, Lord of the Rings, is an epic journey against all odds of the underdog (Frodo). Never mind that if I were Gandalf I would have transported the ring with my magical powers directly to Mt. Doom and the story would have been over. Yes, Gandalf claimed that the ring was too powerful even for him to carry the burden, but using my wizard-like brain I would have summoned one of those large flying eagles or some other mystical creature to carry the ring quickly to its destination. There would have been a multitude of other ways to transport the ring and the story would be over, but it's about suspending disbelief for a few hours, nothing more. Just enjoy the show.

For the people that bash "xyz" I always like to ask them how their movie is doing at the box office? It's much, much harder than you think. Think it's easy, well then go out and do it. Prove us wrong, tell us your mistake-free story and allow us to judge every little nook and cranny of your condensed movie.

Well said some people take things too seriously sometimes

I think it's really bad, with poorly written characters, a stupid plot, the action sequences are not that appealing and the acting is awful. If most people hate this movie it's simply that they are used to a certain standard of quality in entertainment and Olympus Has Fallen falls well below that standard.

reply

You see, that's where I don't see any logic.

You say that people hate this movie because they are used to a certain standard of quality. But as a movie buff, I think some of you critics have an unrealistic standard of quality. I honestly (like honestly honestly) get the feeling that the type of people who bash films like these rarely step outside of the critically-acclaimed-films comfort zone. It's like, I probably see 4 - 5 movies a week, and generally 3 - 4 out of the 5 are just horrible. Then you get that 1 in 5 where you can tell that enough effort and time was put into it to really try and give the audience a good time. And for me, this movie succeeded.

You have to realise, not every movie is going to be a 'pulp fiction' or a 'shawshank redemption'. Once you start seeing enough films to the standard of I dunno... 'grave encounters'... you will realise that films like this really are 1 in 10.

It was fun don't mind the serious "critics" who never have fun in their lives

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie...
May I suggest countless movies of the same genre that are much much better???

Go to your video/dvd store - go to the action section, close your eyes, and pick a DVD... ha..ha..ha..

Seriously - if you haven't seen the original Die Hard... start there.

reply

Of course I've seen the original Die Hard. I'm a movie buff - I own them all. To be quite honest though - they are equally realistic as this and quite a bit slower.

"action section.. close your eyes and pick a DVD" Why the hell would I do that to myself? As if I'd risk picking up something like Fit to Kill, Double Impact or Gunmen... *Shivers*

reply

Unrealistic isn't a problem, but some parts of this movie were downright dumb.
The codes that let you blow up all the nukes in the USA are all only 8 digit and can be bruteforced in a matter of minutes?
No body decided to use the "hydra" when *beep* first hit the fan?
They didn't send in more choppers after the "hydra" was took out?
The bad guy at the end tries to rape choke gerard butler?

Yeah the white house was ridiculously easy to take over, yeah the effects weren't that great that okay, its completely illogical things like this that ruin the movie for me.

Each to their own cwooley. Everyone thinks they can do a better job then the screenwriters but the fact is, 99% of people who think that probably couldn't write a good plot if their life depended on it. I take movies for how they are, if they didn't think to send in more choppers or whatever else, I just let myself assume there is a reason for it (or more commonly, I just don't start asking questions about what is going on). Rape choke? What is that? Can't remember this part, saw it a while ago... you sure it wasn't a rear naked choke? or a triangle choke? These guys were suppose to be proficient in hand to hand combat and these standard moves are like top of the list that would be taught.... (while im not sure what choke it was, im assuming it was one of these? If so, certainly not a flaw in the slightest). If it was just a simple hand to the throat choke - they are just as proficient as any other. Get someone to hold you against a wall and use all the force with their hand on your throat that they can and tell me how long it takes you to pass out (they might crush your windpipe though - maybe not a good idea). If the attacker has control of the other's hands as well, it is very likely that it'll be successful. I doubt if it was one of these the guy would have just been standing back with his hand up on his throat and gerard would have just been standing there with both his arms at his side. If it was this choke, and if the (Asian?) dude had no control of gerards arms/hips whatever - then I will accept that as a flaw.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE. It was exciting it kept me on the edge of my seat. IT WAS A MOVIE for god sake.

But then I could watch Dylan McDermott and Gerard Butler for hours reciting the Yellow Pages.

Being somewhat of a rebel I am so sick of the reality world we live in every day: laws, rules, speed limits, stop lights, arrival times, late fees, time limits, rent payments, bills, I could go on and on.

I watch soaps so I don’t have to see people balancing check books, buying groceries, clothes and refrigerators. So I don’t have to see people waking up with bed head, morning breath, fixing breakfast, doing dishes, putting on makeup and fighting traffic to get to the office on time. So I don’t have to see people wearing the same outfit twice.

It was a movie people. Get over it. Then go home to reality.

SWLinPHX-2 is right!
