Couldn't cut the seat belt?

So Banning (Gerard Butler) had a knife but he couldn't cut the President out then hand him the knife so he could cut his wife out? What's up with that? The President told him her belt was stuck but he struggled pulling the President out for a few seconds instead of just giving him his knife... obviously it wasn't dire enough for him to not cut the President out so he felt he had enough time... I don't get it.

What I didn't understand was how the other people didn't try to put enough weight in the back of the car before it could tip over. I know more than half of the car was hanging, but the First Lady could have still been saved.

All I need is one mic...

reply

After watching the rest of the movie I realized it was so stupid that the seat belt thing didn't even matter.

reply

That's the right answer.

reply

What I don't understand is how not seeing what is in front of you (something broke the windshield) makes you suddenly lose all controls of a vehicle on a straight road/bridge.

reply

I agree with this 100%. Also, it's so strange that the movie didn't even bother explaining what it was that broke the windscreen and caused this event/accident.

reply

If you watched the movie there was nothing much to explain.

A tree bough fell across the windscreen of the lead car. The driver jerked the steering wheel and the car clipped the side of the bridge, the snow/ice on the ground and it's momentum caused the car to do a 180 and was then struck by the car following it.

reply

Was the tree meant to be invisible ? All I saw was a mystery object or force smash the windscreen. I expected the movie would later reveal a secret surrounding what had happened (such as North Korean Terrorist launching some projectile at the vehicle).

reply

Agree! 🤐

reply

Does it matter if the object was not shown? I was a little upset that it was not shown initially but accepted it. For the script purposes, something cracked the windshield and the agent lost control. That's it!

I saw some agents scratching but I am not upset the director did not put onscreen the bug or whatever bit them! Or should he have?

reply

Agree!

That whole scene was just poorly conceived. Just getting past the fact that a seat belt in perhaps the world's safest car, is stuck...okay. I guess I can accept that.

It seemed odd to me that there were only 2 guys trying to prevent the limo from going over. There were way more guys who were a part of the motorcade who should have been available to hold the limo down but they were no where to be seen.

reply

What bothered me was that in reality, the president and the first lady never wear their seat belts when they are in the Beast. I guess the seat belt bit in the movie was added in for plot purposes.

reply

And I think Hollywood always makes sure it sets a good example for the public in terms of always wearing your seatbelt.

reply

Yes, and you want to tell me those monsters weren't equipped with hooks, chains and maybe even winches for just such an eventuality? Was there not one or two operational enough to have backed up to the Presidential car and attempted to secure it, and left unhurt who was thinking quickly enough to try that ... even if there might not have been enough time?

reply

And I expected someone to jump off the bridge after the car, even the President. Was that crazy?

reply

A sudden shift of weight inside the car could cause it to rock, so the driver and front passenger were afraid to move. More men did not assist in holding onto the trunk because they were busy securing the bridge on both ends to make sure no oncoming cars plowed into them.

It weighs more than 10 tons(20,000 pounds). It would take more than fifty 200+ pound men to really have an effect.

reply

It was too much dramatic. Kind of tamely written by the writer(s).

reply

Yes, that entire scene was stupid. If Banning had immediately cut out the president instead of letting the president babble on about getting his wife out, then Banning would have had *just* enough time to cut out the first lady as well, thereby saving the day. The first lady died because the President wouldn't just shut up and allow his people to do their job and get him out.
