Will there be any more?
anyone?
shareprobably not anytime soon... but maybe one day. there's nothing in the planning stages at the moment. you will probably see them on TV again before another film. i don't think disney will let it just dry up. it's a franchise they can make money with and need to keep it alive.
"the muppets" made 160 million worldwide... plus dvd and merchandising. there was an article in forbes about it's profitability. they made some decent money with it.
disney wanted a sequel which became MMW but they wanted it for the next summer and the director and writers couldnt deliver it that soon. i think a summer or holiday release would have been better. so it was given a spring release the next year. as the slot goes it's not bad. alice in wonderland made a huge amount on the same weekend a few years earlier but muppets sold half as much as the first film. 80 million worldwide. they didn't promote it as aggressively or cleverly as they had the first one. and in the UK, the second strongest market for muppets, disney actually opened it up against it's own captain america. it also got killed overseas particularly by other family films. and muppets in many foreign countries have very little connection with people.
i think muppets weren't ready to go off yet on their own and needed a more protected slot. disney probably still profited from home video and merchandising but not enough to greenlight a third at the moment.
bobin who directed it is making the alice in wonderland sequel for disney. so they were very happy with his work.
There's a 3 year gap between this and its predecessor and I'm sure another could be made by 2017.
shareBut "Muppets Most Wanted" flopped. Why would there be a sequel??
shareIf garbage like Steve Martin's Pink Panther "reimagining" can get a sequel, a good film like this movie certainly deserves one. Besides, it cost $50 million and made $78 million. That's a slight profit, not a bomb.
There needs to be a third film anyway, so we can have a triple trilogy of Muppet theatrical films:
THE ORIGINAL HENSON TRILOGY
The Muppet Movie (1979)
The Great Muppet Caper (1981)
The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)
THE 90S REVIVAL TRILOGY
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
Muppets from Space (1999)
THE DISNEY/BOBIN TRILOGY
The Muppets (2011)
Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
Untitled Third Muppets (2017)
I don't believe it flopped, but didn't do as well as the 2011 film.
shareI don't know if it was the release date that hurt it or just that it wasn't as good as the original. I think it is more the latter that affected it in this case. There were so many gags they could've thought of that they didn't do, which I have mentioned on here. I know that if I had been involved as a writer, I would've at least suggested them.
shareProbably. But I hope they do a better job this time. And bring back Gary and Mary.
shareThe movie underperformed indeed, but I still think Disney might consider a sequel. The Muppets is a big franchise, and Disney has their clothes, plush, atractions and all. Not making more films means losing money in all the other sections as well.
shareThey are going to be on ABC this fall, as if you didn't know. So right now, they are back on TV.
