Nashville progressive about Maddy interracial but not Will being gay

It is interesting how Nashville is progressive adding a black male character as Maddie love interest. The audience sees tender moments between the white girl and the black guy. They even had a passionate kiss. Yet Will been on the show for about four years and I cannot recall Will EVER having a sex scene. The writers never show gay intimacy. No kissing, no stroking, no moaning on a bed. Nothing. The show runner is a HOMOPHOBE. He told the press he has big plans for Will yet so far absolutely NOTHING really has happened other than Will dumping the boring boyfriend. Yet, the show is stuck in the dark ages about Will homosexuality. This storyline is good glad it is not ignoring the race issue. So many interracial storylines on TV these days act like race does not matter.

Yea, I seem to recall this thread from a few weeks ago. And those are some good points, however it's what I expected.

They already showed they were incorporating race with Zoey, and the asian attorney that Teddy and Deacon were all over. Of course both of them are hot as hell, so that doesn't hurt.

Will should get a love scene. After all, any reservations should be lessened with the progress of the last few years and what we have seen on cable shows.

The producer claims Will storyline is supposed to be good BUT nothing has really happened. He only had one scene this week and last week he dumped the boring boyfriend. I keep on wondering if CMT is homophobic. The showrunner claims he is not homophobic but seems to be. Will is the only minority regular cast member YET he is always pushed to the sidelines. Never since Chris Carmack started on Nashville has an episode focused on Will. This week the episode focused on Gunnar and Scarlett BORING RELATIONSHIP. Maddy and Clay interracial relationship is very interesting. I am surprised a white show went there. BUT Will storyline is so important to many people yet the show keeps on dragging its heels. The straight characters on Nashville get to have passion and love scenes yet Will does not. It is down right homophobic. Everyone knows Will is gay so give the guy some PASSION. Will is a handsome young gay man now single yet the show treats him like is a virgin. The homophobia is so blatant by CMT.

reply

The only reason it "went there" is because everyone else is doing it, so the audience sees this coming from a mile away. In your head you're watching social engineering -- not good drama. These guys know their audience. That's why you don't see an openly gay scene.

Interracial dating is "progressive"? Is this 2017.

Why was your go to move whining about the show adding a black male in comparison to you feeling Will doesn't have enough scenes? Do you not see the problem with this?

reply

I don't think you are understanding my argument. And I do not appreciate you saying I am whining when I am point out the prejudice of the show runners. The new show runner claimed he would treat Will Lexington with respect. So far this season Will has been on the side lines and the writers seem hell bent treating him like an afterthought. There are MANY PEOPLE who ONLY watch Nashville specifically because the show has a gay male character. I think the show is progressive adding the black boyfriend for Maddie. I am all for it. My point is it is interesting the show can actually deal with real social issues like race and interracial dating. HOWEVER, when it comes to another social issue such as gay men and gay love the show FAILS BADLY. The lack of intimacy Will Lexington has had on Nashville is just plain homophobia.

1. Will is a secondary character.

2. This season is 5 episodes in. Chill out.

3. It's now on CMT. You can't blame the showrunners or the Network for how sensitive to homosexuality the audience is. It's a formerly cancelled show on a new Network with new writers. It's expected for writers of their caliber to tread carefully with sensitive material. If they were homophobic they would've cut Chris Carmack altogether and given up on Will. The fact that he is still there says a lot about how progressive they want to be. Give them a chance. If by the end of the season he's still as limited as he is now then you can cry foul and claim they're homophobic.

Actually yes I can, I know people on this board want to be PC but for many people interracial dating YES in 2017 is considered controversial. But your comment about CMT and the showerunners being "sensitive" about homosexuality sounds a bit HOMOPHOBIC. It is 2017 not 1987. It is a HOMOPHOBIC TROPE people tell gays all the time like "wait your turn". Well it is the year 2017 and CMT needs to get with the damn program. LGBT people deserve to be treated the SAME AS HETEROSEXUALS. Will has been on Nashville for four years YET the writers have never given him a sexually charged and complicated relationship. The so called relationship with Kevin is pretty restrained and might I add a bit HOMOPHOBIC AS WELL. Kevin never came across as Will boyfriend to me he came across has his FRIEND. The second episode when Will and Kevin decide to move in together they hugged. I was so disappointed to see that HOMOPHOBIC Bias OF THE SHOW RUNNERS. It is funny watching Nashville they can sensitively portray an interracial couple BUT the gay man who is an adult and in his 20s is being treated like he is some sexually repressed teenager. The bias is astounding. Especially in the Southern American states. There was a judge I forget the American state a few years ago who refused to allow an interracial couple to get married. I became big news and I think the judge was disbarred. But it is foolish to think everyone is cool with interracial relationships. Interracial relationships are becoming more of the norm but definitely people some do have a problem with it. It is just these days people realize if they are open about not agreeing with an interracial couple they are frowned upon.

You're very quick to judge, which is ironic since you're so pissed off about the writers supposedly doing the same thing. First and foremost this is a BUSINESS and they had just been handed a DEAD show. Do you know what CMT stands for? Country Music Television. Do you know who the primary audience is for country music? Fundamentalist Christians. Do you know what would happen if they had Will in a relationship the likes of Rayna and Deacon? Gunnar and Scarlett? Avery and Juliette? THEY WOULDN'T HAVE AN AUDIENCE and therefore they wouldn't have a show and BOOM they just killed their business. I'm not saying it's "right" I'm saying it's the reality of the situation. They've begun pushing the envelope with sexual material. Scarlett completely naked, Juliette attempting to take off Avery's pants - these are small moves in a new direction, but with Will, I'm sorry, but a smart showrunner needs to be careful. If you knew anything about the new writers you'd know they're some of the smartest in the business and responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed television of the past 30 years.

To immediately jump to the conclusion that they're homophobic and that is the ONLY reason Will isn't being shown sexually is about as ignorant and small minded as you are accusing them of being. As I said it's very progressive to even have a Gay character. I applaud them for not writing him out.

If you're that desperate to see a guy in a sexually charged relationship on TV, watch gay porn and get satisfied that way. For now. They're moving in the right direction but one must be subtle, cautious and aware of their audience.

My guess is that this would have happened already if they were portraying a lesbian couple.

Soo.... not only are they homophobic but they're particularly homophobic against MEN? And you call me absurb? OK.

My opinion stands. Will is a secondary character, you have a very specific audience, and in a lot of ways it's a new show. In this situation it being on cable doesn't have much impact.

If you all want to attack the show 5 episodes in be my guest. Watch something else and get off this board.

I said it is absurd to say the primary audience for country music is fundamentalist Christians.

No, it's not. I said PRIMARY. Not exclusively.

I never said this was a "booster board". Sure, you have a right to your opinion as do I. I'm happy you recognize that. However, I can disagree with an opinion without lowering myself to digs to the opposing party.

I can't tell if you're serious. CMT is the first to finally move Will away from being just his sexuality to having an actual storyline. He's bored in his current relationship and wanted to explore dating. His boyfriend finally figured that out and dumped him.

He's not only kissed two men since then but flirted with a multitude of men on screen. It's pretty clear he's going to start getting out there and dating. It's also looking painfully obvious that he's going to have a relationship with the fashion designer.

As someone who's both black and gay it's really tiresome how some people feel the need to drag black people into literally everything. We don't exist solely so you can make a point. It's offensive. There's one black person on the show and he's not exactly hogging up screen time either. Who would you have used as your example before all of 2 episodes ago? Hmm?

My point still stands. Maddie's relationship has absolutely nothing to do with Will. Will has been on since the series began and his relationship isn't remotely new. It's honestly about time they ended it and finally let him explore new relationships. He's never even had a real storyline up until now.

They've given all the characters a rotation. Will isn't the only character who hasn't been featured on every episode. There's no way you could fit everyone on screen at all times.

The real problem is that you by your own admission do only watch this show for one character. Therefore you really don't actually like the show and are wasting your time. It's an ensemble cast not the Will Lexington show. Try paying attention to all of the characters.

Nashville isn't about being progressive. In fact in 2017 no one in their right mind would call an interracial relation ship or a gay relationship being on tv progressive. They're all over the place in real life and on tv... Open your eyes.

CMT seems to realize there was a lack of diversity on the show so they seem to be slowly adding some. Good for them. Not a big deal to me one way or the other. And I think Will gets plenty of screen time compared to the other characters it's pretty balanced for once.

If you had made this topic minus the inclusion of random black characters I'd have agreed because ABC barely ever featured Will and went weeks without showing him on screen. That's why he's been in the same dull relationship for so long.

I can tell you don't really watch the show beyond Will scenes so you'd probably be better served waiting for the scenes to make their way onto Youtube all at once without the other characters. There's nothing wrong with the show or the way they're handling Will. In fact I'd like him to stop being a "gay character" and start being a complete character with a life outside of just his sexuality. What else does Will do beside struggle with being gay and perform on stage? When are we going to see that? CMT appears to be working their way up to what comes next. I'm glad.
