I think the music video subplot
...needed to end yesterday!
It is stupid!
Say what you want but Nashville fans have been clamoring about the show returning to its focus on the music industry - and making music videos is certainly part of that. Also did not anyone else notice that Clare Bowen totally knocked it out of the park with her bravura performance in this episode? I thought she was brilliant!
shareI agree. Clare did a great job and I loved this episode.
shareI agree - I know that some directors can be "there way or no way" but this guy is a pain in the butt. Scarlett isn't use to acting for one thing and him yelling at her constantly then erasing all the footage was such a prick move. I think he's a freaking weirdo who needs to go back to Los Angeles or Hollywood (whatever) and work w/the weirdo actor/actresses he use to working w/b/c he has no patience at all. I really do NOT like this guy at all.
shareI thought it was great
shareI actually liked this story because it brought up some interesting discussions. The director was verbally abusive to Scarlett, yet I don't know if he actually meant half of what he was saying. I don't excuse how he treated her but I think he was really trying to get a performance out of her and push her out of her comfort zone, whereas Scarlett did not want to go there.
Having said that, I thought Scarlett looked beautiful so part of me was repulsed by how the director was treating her but I was also hoping to see Scarlett let go and embrace a more liberated side of herself.
We also haven't seen the final video or its reaction; I think Scarlett is going to be a huge star because of this video and it will be a internal conflict for Scarlett.
I actually liked what the director was doing. Clare came off as sexy and not mousy, down home country Scarlett.
shareI actually liked this subplot because from how I viewed it it was a true representation of how so many female artists are seen in the music industry i.e. they must act provocatively in order for their music to sell rather than it just being based on vocal talent alone.
I also knew that Madonna was going to be mentioned. I loved her 80s, 90s and early 2000s output but IMO the way she's behaving now just comes across as a desperate attempt to remain relevant among today's music listeners rather that just producing memorable songs like she used to do.

Mariah is another one who's sexy is way past it's expiration date. Mariah is that desperate 45 year old who still dresses and thinks she's 20. Kinda embarrassing to watch.

You missed my point totally. I was saying I liked what he was doing as far the concept and the visuals

No I didn't agree with how he was talking to her. It was unprofessional but what I am getting at, aside from how he achieved the product, I liked the concept for the video with that dark and vintage theme.
shareFor me the video didn't look very country at all, nor did I think it fit the song.
shareDefinitely disagree! Really appreciated more of their focus back on the industry and they haven't yet captured a music video shoot like that before. Absolutely beats the standard soap opera family drama.

Country music videos are usually extremely literal and not artsy fartsy like that. Knowing that, it didn't really find it particularly believable. Somebody (Bucky) would have at least expressed concerns that it was too suggestive and no country music tv outlet would play that video.
Although, it was nice to finally see someone try to pull that giant stick out of Scarlet's a$$ and try to make her less scared of her own shadow.
I don't mind the video shoot subplot.
