biggest plothole

at the end gustave and zero get caught fighting the old lady's son with the letter that gustave is to inherit the entire fortune . gustave is a fugitive who's escape led to the murder of several guards and the letter has no bearance on gustave's innocence it actually implies he had even more reason to kill her than anyone else....so why isn't gustave imprisoned for her murder? the movie is just not oscar material with that giant plothole in it.

1) when Gustave took the painting, he had no idea that Serge had secreted the will in the wrapping, and

2) with Henckels dead and Dmitri fleeing into exile, the suspicion turns on them. The case against Gustave was weak to begin with--I'm pretty certain that he could establish that he was at the hotel from the time Tilda Swinton's character left to the time her dead body was discovered.

reply

Who actually murdered the old lady? Was it Dmitri her son? Do we know?

reply

Dmitri hired Joplin to kill Madame D. There was a bottle of green poison sitting on Joplin's desk in one scene. So it was implied those two were working together.

I may not have the exact details right, but during one of the prison visits Gustave tells Zero he has an alibi - he was with the wife of some prominent man and can't give the secret away.

Now that you mention it, I remember that scene.

And besides, she licked it.
The key evidence was the bottle of strychnine on the desk of Willem Dafoe's character, and Dmitri disappeared (as noted in the newspaper) after the hotel shootout, so the suspicion fell on the two of them.

reply

Henckels didn't die.

reply

I had meant Jansing (Willem Dafoe). I probably should have checked and found that Henckels was Edward Norton's character. Also, we don't know his fate. It could have been that the same death squad that killed Gustave purged him as well, but that would be pure conjecture.

reply

Henckels was not dead. He was the one reading the second copy of the second will near the end in the hotel.

reply

I agree. Innocent of the ladies murder or not - he was still part of a gang that murdered 5 guards while escaping from prison.

reply

I agree with the OP, but I just said oh what the hell, and went with it. I don't think it takes it out of the Oscar category though. That kind of detail isn't incredibly important in this kind of film I believe. I'm usually a stickler myself, but I just didn't think it was that important here.

reply

Actually an even bigger plothole is why he was jailed without a trial, evidence, etc. He had a very strong alibi, as he was probably working during the murder. It was just something that had to fall on the audience's suspension of disbelief.

reply

He was living in a fascist society. You think people have never been jailed without a trial before?

Let's be bad guys.

You have got to be kidding me looking for "plotholes" in a comedic masterpiece like this.
