One of the best movie scenes I saw this year. That transition after the feel good montage with positive music to that rainy scary situation. That industrial dark sound which begins to play when Mickey touches the engine and see something is wrong. great dialogue and acting, because that situation with missing keys in ignition is directed in a way that it still keeps you thrilled and you can´t think "why the *beep* he didn´t check if the key is really there." And then if you think it´s all over there is that second car approaching and again that sound and great dialogue and acting. I love it how the camera is still with our heroes when the truck is coming and keeps you in tension. I don´t know how much creator had to think about this whole sequence, but it´s a *beep* good directed. I saw this scene like three or four times and couldn´find a false tone there.

Wow, thank you... I am the cinematographer. That was probably the worst day of my life. A lot to shoot in one day and the rain was relentless. We were cold and the equipment was soaked. Eventually the audio equipment broke and we lost the sunlight trying to fix it before we moved onto plan B for audio. By far the hardest scenes to shoot, audio mix, and color correct. (There's even fake rain I added in some shots as the rain was stopping and starting.) I also made that droning sound for the score and am very glad to read that it had the right effect on you. It repeating through the whole first half of the sequence then BAM it starts up again and you know these guys aren't safe yet.
Exactly. It had the right effect, believe me :) Anyway thanks for reply and you answered another question i had in mind, "rain thing". if it was in plan to shoot in rain or "accident". If it wasn´t a plan, still it adds to a power of this scene, somebody up there likes you :)
I recommended The Battery to some movie fans and some of them had very positive reaction. I even recommended it to one guy who is one of the organizers of Prague festival "Fresh Film Fest", it´s the festival for young independent filmmakers and their work, only first time and second time directors can get their work there. He said he´ll check it out and if that impresses him (I´m sure it will) maybe he´ll remember you and he´ll keep an eye on your work. Prince Avalanche! David Gordon Green that directed that made a movie called All the Real Girls... That was the inspiration for the tone of The Battery. That's how Jeremy convinced me to shoot a zombie movie. It was so great to see David Gordon Green make a quiet and small movie again.
Dying to see Blue is the Warmest Color, mainly from the geeky perspective that it was shot on the camera I own now and won Cannes. I've yet to see a feature shot with my current camera.
I need to check out the other movies on your list too. Some I've been waiting for a US release.
Thanks for conversation, It´s strange but good to talk with one of the creators of your favourite movie. When i wrote a brief text about The Battery for one local (I´m from Czech Republic) website similar to imdb i wrote that´s a little bit like Prince Avalanche with zombies :)
I like David Gordon Green too, I didn´t see All The Real girls yet but some other early works yes. Looking Forward for his latest - Joe with Nicolas Cage.
It´s funny, you in USA are waiting for some movies which screened here in cinemas already and on the other hand I´m waiting here in Europe for other movies which you could see there months ago :)
Just one last question: Did you guys saw movie Bellflower? All i read about your movie and how it was created and your enthusiasm resembles me that situation about that little great indie which hit it quite big and has lot of fans and the guys behind it are now preparing their second feature which is like my most anticipated hardcore indie movie ever. And they have much more money for that second movie (but still in the vein of real indie route). Because they did the kickstarter way. And I know they had plan to collect about 60 000 dollars but the support of fans was much bigger that they exceeded it a lot and this fan support attracted companies which than helped with the rest of the money. I don´t know your plans but think you should consider kickstarter way for a sequel (which i would love to see). I can imagine that it´s a much more responsibility then, but from what i saw you guys have the skill to do another great movie with that.
I´m like beginning to dreaming a lot, so i will end this. Again - wish you a good luck with your future career and looking forward for another projects, i belive I´m goin to hear about you more in the future. Of yourse i clicked "like" in your movieprofile on fb :)

I should also say, I've actually been working on those same two car standoff sequences all week.... Have to cut all the dialogue out and fix all the holes that that will make. Then that will be used to dub the movie in other languages. So I've been watching these sequences on a loop for DAYS. The version that's in the audio program is before the color was corrected and it makes me cringe to watch. Because the audio died, we probably had 15 minutes of sunlight left to film everything after Annie pulls the gun. I remember the big question after the shoot was whether the sequence would ever work, as we only had 1 take of most things toward the end of the sequence and the footage was noisy (from not having enough light). Sadly, Annie's closeup is my worst work in the movie. There was so little light left that I had to switch to a different lens and that lens had condensation build up inside of it in the cold, wet weather. It was either shoot through a foggy lens or not get the scene. I wanted to reshoot because of those shots so bad but there was a school on that road and they reopened. That said, looking back now 2 1/2 years later, we would have never lucked out with that gloomy, wet weather a second time. It only rained twice the whole shoot (the other time when Mickey is crying in the woods)... Both times the rain was right on cue.
qquegchristian-1, i admit i know little to nothing about how movies are made (like what you do) but speaking as a layman who just loves movies, all your work paid off. for example you said Annie's closeup was your worst work in the movie but IMO there's absolutely nothing wrong with that scene/that footage/etc. in fact that scene works, in part, because of the overall atmosphere (gloomy, scary-ish) in the shot.
forgive my trying to explain my view on this, i really am not familiar with what constitutes a technically good shot or not but again, speaking a a movie layman the scene works great! :)
the last forty minutes were all concentrated in that vehicle I had expected more and hoped they went and reached Annies place for a climatic bloody showdown with both zombies and humans.
Tuco, i agree w/ you. this scene IMO was the best scene in the overall good movie. this scene tensed me up! lol. as soon as Mickey put his hand on the hood of the car i knew things weren't going to be easy. then when Annie and her henchman guy show up...what a b!tch she was! lol.
qquegchristian-1, you guys did a great job especially with this scene. i actually love the fact that the scene was very tension filled but not bombastic and over the top in it's violence and coldness (from the characters).
i want that b!tch to die for what she did and i can't lie...when Ben said if he makes it out of the car alive, he's coming to put a bullet in her head....my favorite part of the movie! i needed that from Ben after all they/he had been through.
