Another Plot Hole I Forgot To Mention

While i was absolutely floored by this film, I can't help but be extremely annoyed that Affleck's character didn't just get a frame trail set in motion against his wife. I've mentioned the absurd amount of blood and trashed living room but I've thought about it and that could have been explained to the police that Patrick's character forcefully kidnapped her. Okay, fine but what about ALL those security cameras at his private place? The cameras would have shown that Affleck's wife went by her own free will. There were also interior cameras and would have shown she was leisurely roaming around the house comfortably. It would completely contradict her attempt at showing the outside cameras she was being held captive. If someone could come up with an explanation for me that would be awesome!

Were there interior cameras? I don't remember seeing them. I just remember seeing shots of the front and along the side where she fake screamed after he left that day.

reply

There weren't interior cameras? I thought when she was home alone and looking through the feeds on the computer, I saw a couple interior shots...but I could be wrong. Either way, that still doesn't explain the feed that captured her when she willingly walked into his home, as well as all that time she had to escape when Patrick's character was at work.

reply

I don't remember interior shots either. That doesn't mean they weren't there and/or were used. I never read the book, but from what others have said is that she learned where the cameras were and stayed out of their view.

I also think they said that the video of her arriving was explained by him having given her drugs. But, I could be wrong.

As far as not escaping, that is why she did stuff to her wrists. It was to show that she'd been tied up.

Not necessarily a plot hole, but awfully convenient that absolutely NOBODY had conflicting reports as to where Patrick's character was when he was supposedly abducting her. I mean, IF he was in a work meeting (for example) SOMEONE would have come forward. It's hard for Patrick to defend himself when he's dead, but SOMEONE would be curious about a colleague/friend sufdenly being a abducto/rapist.

Yeah, Desi is a plot hole. The abduction Amy lied about took several days, including a night at a ratty motel, according to Amy. This has to be something the police would check, and they would learn from his mother at least, that he was nowhere near North Carthage during the time period he was supposedly kidnapping Amy. It is a long period of time between Amy's disappearance and her ending up at Desi's place. There is surely security footage showing his car at his own home during the time she claims he kidnapped her in it. And didn't he lunch with his mother every day? Security cameras around town would show his Jag outside restaurants, gas stations, etc. during the time Amy pretended he kidnapped her. And restaurant personnel would remember seeing him. I mean, she specifically said he kidnapped her in his Jag. Amy can't fudge the timeline - she disappeared on a specific day, and also said there was a night in a motel. If we see Desi's car near his own home during the time period he was supposedly traveling to and from Carthage to kidnap her, it's all over.

Then there are the logistics of his killing. She's tied up, but manages to grab the knife? What is the food content in her stomach? Is is the meat she claims he cut up and fed her? How did she get untied to kill him?

She comes home with a super shady story; we can see the cops are dubious. So this means the anti-freeze vomit is also a plot hole. With the cops suspecting she murdered Desi, she can't show up with a jar of year-old vomit and start blaming Nick. That's as good as confessing she's a psycho who sets men up.

I also have my doubts she could have stashed away 10k in cash. That's a lot of money for a duo just trying to get on their feet running a bar. A couple thousand, ok, but not ten thousand, not on top of twenty five hundred in credit card purchases. A year of stealing money from the tip jar and lifting bills from Nick's wallet is still not going to get her that much cash.

She comes home with a super shady story ...
I confess to loving the movie and not having read the book, but I was a little surprised the cops were so quick to accept Amy's story, apart from Boney. I put it down to media intimidation and focus on the arrest of Nick, though actually they did seem pretty careful in building their case. You would really think/hope there would be a very detailed investigation of Amy's story and Desi's death, but that doesn't appear to occur.🐭

reply

Yeah, Desi is a plot hole.

Sigh. This is not how plot holes work. The audience is well aware that Desi did not take Amy. In order for it to be a plot hole the audience would need to be unaware of that fact. Other characters in the story being out of loop is not a plot hole. Beyond that things are dicey with Desi and whether the police an definitively determine his whereabouts in days after her abduction. In both the book and the movie, Desi shows up at a search or vigil for Amy. This looks bad for him because it looks like he is returning to the scene of the crime. In the book, it is made to seem as though his mother would be is alibi, she is considered unreliable by both the investigators and the media. The movie never says whether he has a job or not.

What is the food content in her stomach?

You do realize that this is not something they can easily check on a living person, right?

So this means the anti-freeze vomit is also a plot hole.

Not really. The anti-freeze is never mentioned in the movie. And beyond that in the book, Nick gets rid of it and Amy doesn't care. She knows that it is useless at that point and she has moved beyond that angle anyway. The only time it comes into play in the book, is when Boney asks her about getting sick. But since the police never had the vomit, there is nothing for anyone to go after.

reply

Umm, you can tell a lot about someone's recent diet just by looking at their feces.

reply

That only works if the police were given a warrant to check her feces. If she went to the bathroom, the nurses were not going to analyze or test her feces without an order from a doctor. And usually those orders only happen if the doctor suspects various health problems. That doesn't apply in this case. You are grasping at straws big time.

The money is a non issue. She "gave" her parents $800k plus. Not hard to palm $10k of that as she handed it over to them.

reply

Total non issue. She made random bank withdrawals all year, and also took out cash advances from all the credit cards she opened in Nick's name. So no, not a "plot hole," and not unbelievable at all. "I don't think this could happen in real life" isn't a plot hole. A plot hole is something like a character having a child at the beginning of the film and then it's never seen or mentioned again.
