Why did she bother to pound herself in the face with a hammer? I know at that point she still intended to kill herself but it certainly wouldn't have looked like the wound that would give a "head wound kind of bleed" that she had set up with the blood.

The two things are separate. The black eye was to blend in with the hillbillies, make her story of 'abusive ex' seem true.

it also makes her harder to recognise
