Or was it because he was super controlling and creepy? I.e. taking away her "iPad" shutting off the tv, telling her not to read things, keeping her locked in the house, saying that he doesn't want to have to force himself on her, etc...

I don't think that was her firm plan until she was robbed and desperate. But her modus operandi was to eventually destroy any man that fell within her orbit. I think the plan jelled when she was watching the interview and he became so controlling during it. You could see the wheels turning. What a great performance by Rosamund Pike.
shareExactly how I saw it. She initially planned to leave her husband and frame him for murder. Only when she got robbed did she need a Plan B, which brought Desi into the picture. And even then, she only decided to kill him once Ben gave the TV interview convincing her to come home.
Suddenly then she needed to find a way to reappear without damaging her reputation. So she couldn't simply show up and say "surprise, I'm not dead, I was just sneaking around!" because then everyone would think she was a crazy psychopath. Instead she makes up this terrific rape/abduction story that necessarily means killing Desi.
So in a sense, and of course it's not his fault, but Ben Affleck's character gets Desi killed. If he hadn't convinced Amy to come home, Desi wouldn't have had to die.

yep. she was clearly playing with fire with Desi, she would have ended up killing him to get away even if she hadn't gone back to Nick. probably she would have robbed him blind, tried to make it look like a robbery gone wrong or something and used her amazing Clark Kent disguise to sneak out the country and start a new life in Canada, Mexico or maybe just next door to Nick since nobody recognises her anyway despite all the TV coverage
