Does anyone else think that this movie...

...might disappoint at the U.S. box office? It's pretty unheard of for a major kids movie to open in January, especially when it's not over Martin Luther King weekend (Nut Job/Paddington/Strange Magic were kids movies, but not major ones.) Especially since the second film had a somewhat significant drop in grosses from the first. However, it will likely be huge in China, especially with the tie-in around Chinese New Year.

reply

God I hope not. Dreamworks is probably banking on the fact that it won't have any competition during its weeks in theater, and That the KFP brand is large enough to sell itself.
Otherwise it could be a lack of confidence in the film, but since the release date has been secured since early in production, that probably isn't the case.

reply

Nope, they're banking on the fact that the series is big bucks in China, where they STILL can't produce an animated movie of the same quality. Not even close. It'll probably make even less than the second one in the U.S. (which made even less than the first), but squeezing that Chinese market is everything these days, and as long as the product is flashy and sparkly, the Mainlanders will be impressed and their nationalist pride will be stoked, so it doesn't really have to be any good. Just look at Kung Fu Panda 2.

reply

Yes, although China is not infallible. Star Wars is currently underperforming in China.

Expendables 2 was a huge hit in China. I think one of the Transformers movies was also big over there ... So big heavy sigh ...

I am The Doctor and this is my spoon !

Hope it tanks and hack black never gets work again

Hope it tanks and hack black never gets work again
That sounds like bitterness.

reply

It will be successful no matter what if it's as good as first 2 films.

reply

I think it might. It has been five years since the last one came out so I think a lot of kids have moved on.

reply

No, why would it? Most of the movies in theaters now are either aimed at gaining awards or at just being dumped because the studio knew they were crap. DreamWorks is taking advantage of that and they should have a solid weekend out of it.
