Why is this one underperforming so much in the U.S....

The Kung Fu Panda, was a big hit when it came out, the second was a modest success domestically, but this does not even look to break even in the United States (its budget is listed at $130-$140 million) and may not make more than $110 million domestically. This is almost $100 million less than the first not including inflation, and about $50 million less than the second one. What do you think caused audiences to tire of this series so quickly.

Another interesting note will be if the third How to Train Your Dragon will perform as poorly domestically, as the first was a huge hit, but the second made less than the first, one has to wonder if the third film will be like a Kung Fu Panda 3, and really underperform.

Where is the budget listed?

I think that the five year gap between the second and the third one did not help it. Many kids probably moved on.

I'm sure answering the ops question would take a bit of analysis with more information than we have. For one thing, the other movies were released in May and June. I've read that Panda 3 is outperforming typical releases for this time of year. There were also some storms during opening weekend that prevented attendance at theaters. That's only a partial list of variables and I'm sure there are a lot more.

Judging from recent theatre reports, sounds like kids are dragging their parents to see Deadpool over KFP.

"DO NOT WRECK THIS GIGANTIC DOOM."

Don't see why they would. Having seen both Deadpool and KFP 3, I would go see Panda again way more than Deadpool. The movie itself wasn't bad, but I got a whole lot more enjoyment out of seeing Po figure out who he was than Deadpool being the jacka** that he is.
