So this movie made only 100 m overseas without China ?

this movie is right now on 263 million overseas, but with 150 million from China. The second movie made 500 million overseas, and back than China was not a big market. It's impossible that this movie made only 110 million overseas, I can't believe that. Dreamworks animation has one of the worst marketings ever, and even the release date was bad.

I don't know how to really analyze this sort of thing and have no idea how animated movies or any movies typically do overseas, but that is a huge difference. It isn't finished releasing, however. I saw a few April release dates someplace, India among them. Again, I don't know enough to say if India is an important market or not, but the Indian DW studio was heavily credited in this film, so my guess is that it will do well there. It is hard to imagine that it will meet the figures you gave for KFP2. Another thing to consider, however, is that many of the foreign releases just happened on March 20 and the reported income is from March 22, so those figures should rise some.

The release date was better than the originally intended one that would have put this film up against the new Star Wars movie. I can't even imagine the kind of strategy that goes into trying to find a good release date and guessing what competitor studios will do at the same time. The date wasn't probably as favorable as last time.

I would agree that DW needs help with their marketing in general. Their previews are usually terrible. I saw a news release where they had brought someone new in and I can only hope that things improve in this area.

My figures, btw, from Box Office Mojo: Foreign total(as of 3/22) $263,293,982 less China total (as of 3/20) $149,196,939 = $114,097,043
