When the cop goes to the house to investigate the report of a woman screaming, he sees what appears to be a bloodstain on the carpet.

Towards the end, we see Ethan apparently causing that bloodstain with his boot, but this was chronologically much later on.

Can anyone explain this bit please?

The stain the cop saw was caused by Caan's wife when she spilled wine.

.. I can understand that you were sleeping half of the movie and not paying attention because there wasn't any acting until the end.. but still.
