I kinda missed it or was unclear. Not really interested in watching this movie again. Anybody know?

Ethan's Dad was abusive and the neighbor intervened during a fight between him and Ethan's Mom. They then got into a fight themselves and the police arrested the Dad. The neighbor then started talking regularly with Ethan's Mom, eventually convincing him to leave Ethan's Dad. The whole thing was supposed to show that Ethan (at least partially) was inspired to do the experiment out of revenge.
