The Most Annoying Teenager EVER!!

Did they have to make Ethan so annoying in EVERY scene! He grated on my nerves. Maybe it was part of his character but they really went overboard with it.

I raised three teenagers and, as a result, had untold numbers of them in and out of my house over the years.

Ethan was far from being the most annoying teenager ever. He's not even a contender.

Lol! Thanks! I haven't been around as many teenagers as you but I'll take your word for it:)

He seemed like a budding sociopath (more so by the film's ending). Did you run into other teens with that profile? Not just annoying, but actually missing something human and essential in their internal makeup.. ?

I knew two that seemed to have that potential. Both pulled out of it as they matured, and were lucky or smart enough to not have made stupid choices in youth that would have damaged their abilities to grow into relatively healthy adults. Both of them had very bad family histories. One's mother had died when he was very young and his father buried his grief in work, leaving the kid to raise himself. The other had been beaten nearly to death by his mother and grew up in a series of really awful foster homes. We kept him at our house as often as his foster families would allow.

To a degree, it's hard to psychologically diagnose any adolescent, because their brains are so unformed and their hormones are so out of control that they're all a bit nuts. Lacking any real concept of consequences can look a lot like sociopathy, but as their brains mature, the foundation given by parents or other influences will usually help them on a path to sanity/maturity. It's only those kids who suffer attachment disorders or severe trauma or neglect who end up "cementing" into narcissism or a sociopathic lack of empathy.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply.

There are a couple of ways to look at it: One is that okay kids develop a bad shell b/c of *beep* they go through - and then possibly lose some of that badness as they mature.

The second is that some kids are missing something (due to genes, bad experiences or a mix of both) and as they mature, learn to behave in more socially acceptable ways because of rewards of fitting in as well as dislike of consequences.

Hmm..

Thanks again for the interesting thoughts and also for your outreach to those kids!

Yes, a hell of a stretch. But still very annoying. Kind of kid that makes you wish someone would just bash their face in.

His voice made me turn down the volume whenever he was on.

Ethan was definitely pretty annoying. I gave this movie a six because of the dialogue between the two boys, I just couldn't take it.

The most annoying character in the history of cinema. The actor is probably just as annoying offscreen in real life.

reply

Haha he gives me that impression, too.

Cute kid, horrible voice.
