What did they expect to begin with?

I could understand that maybe someone as dumb as the blond kid would think it's a good idea to film yourself breaking laws for publicity.
But even if it is for the sake of social study someone who's qualifying for MIT should think "Well, it might provide an insight into humanity but it's sure as *beep* going to *beep* up my future if it's published."

Andskotinn!

Personally I doubt the intelligence of both kids. Ethan made out the other was really clever, but he clearly wasn't, he was just good with computers and had a rich daddy. I think the film wanted to imply that whilst he was intelligent he wasn't emotionally mature, though he had the potential to be (hence why at the end he lives after giving Ethan one filthy look; he didn't want to be like Ethan.) But, I think the film failed in this regard because the premise itself was so cruel and clearly would end in tragedy, that only a malicious person or an idiot would go through with it.
