Holy shit there is nothing that interesting about this on rewatch

This is as an uninteresting as Spider-Man 3 or the Webb movies. Spider-Man 1 and 2 are still the high bar for this franchise.

Agreed. It stunk.

I can make the same argument for Raimi’s campy-ish Spider-Man 1. What does it have that makes it so absorbing and rewatchable now? Rhetorical

Spider-Man 2 setting the bar high is of course an opinion shared by many. But Homecoming, yeah, it certainly isn’t a lesser movie than Spider-Man 1 (for one thing, I can take Keaton’s Vulture far more seriously than the memorable but incredibly hammy Green Goblin). And though you’re clearly not alone in feeling this way overall (the Raimi/Maguire stans who are fiercely anti-MCU Spidey are with you in particular), it appears I’m with many who found Homecoming actually awesome and, yes, refreshing. The relationship between Tony and Peter alone made this a different kind of Spider-Man film - and an interesting one at that. Iron Boy junior? Super edgy and original. Good to know the haters don’t speak for everyone (not even close).

Hmmm.... Spider-Man 1 covers a lot of territories, narratively. It's not parceling out little, low-stakes chapters of Peter's life, in order to sustain the life of the franchise over a decade, but instead has an epic sweep. We see Peter before his transformation, we see him develop, grow from a callow teenager to a sobered young adult, graduate, and make the first tentative steps into the "real world" (along with Mary Jane and Harry). In short, I like Spider-Man 1 because it's about people, even if the story is corny, and the characters are not very original. The fact that personal drama is at the forefront, and not meta jokes and Joss Whedon quips, gives me some kind of emotional foothold into this world. In other words, I think I'm supposed to "feel" something when I watch Spider-Man 1, and this and other Marvel movies aren't about that - you're just supposed to passively absorb eye-candy and chuckle at quips delivered at the breathless pace of a Chuck Lorre sitcom. What Marvel has mastered is turning movies not into cinematic equivalent of comic books, but Lay's potato chips - reliable mass-produced comfort food that never strays from a certain baseline of tastiness, but neither does it distinguish itself in any way.

Spider-Man 1 is a classic. It forever changed the landscape of superhero movies.

Homecoming is like an already forgotten episode of an old tv series.

I don't think any of the Spider-Man movies are all that great. #2 has the best action though, and Doc Oc was very well done.

Totally agree. I haven't seen this since I saw it in the theater back in 2017, and so I rewatched it today yeah this movie doesn't hold up.

The movie overall is just bland and dull.

Just rewatched it again for the, oh, I-lost-count-time and HOLY SHIT I still love it! So happy we got this Spidey. (Btw, timely and unsurprising negative post-bump, usual broken record detractors up on this mofo.)

Oh, and for the record I was all about Raimi’s movies when they came out. But even after rewatching 1 & 2 recently (and still loving them), I fail to see how they - particularly 1 - are that superior to the new ones like many kewl gatekeepers claim. And for as good as it is, Spider-Man 2 has more problems than many would care to admit.

Anyways, damn right Homecoming remains interesting to me and many more. The broken record haters…. zzzz

So I just rewatched this movie after several years, and it was better than I remembered. Likeable hero, lots of fun action sequences, some of the absurd Marvel humor that I like, and things got damn gripping in the last act just when they needed to.

Not great cinema, and obviously not a lot points for originally as it's following the successful Marvel formula, but it's an enjoyable way to spend an evening of sick time.
