The audience breakdown was 43% under age 18!
Says Deadline.com. I pulled up the past articles for this year and Guardians 2 opened with only 24% under 18 and Wonder Woman 14% under 18.
This hugely skewed percentage coupled with a gross that was many millions under Guardians 2 indicates that this movie lost older audiences that normally go to superhero flicks. It could definitely be argued that Wonder Woman did not appeal to young people enough (not sure if that got rectified with its solid legs later or not). But Guardians 2 seemed to be closer to the sweet spot, appealing to both older and younger crowds.
As a classic character older audiences grew up with just like Wonder Woman, a Spider-Man movie should not have skewed this young. The young-looking cast and the corny, cliched high school one-liners in the trailer were probably a turn-off to older audiences who have gotten used to more adult and intellectual content in their superhero films.
This number also suggests the box office legs will not be good, because teens are the ones who rush out on opening weekend while adult audiences tend to come out slower and give a movie better legs.
