Who else would have preferred a college setting?

I personally have never particularly cared for superhero stories set in high school. High school settings in general just don't interest me. I'm not interested in seeing Peter trying to get to class on time so he doesn't get detention, or trying to find a date to the prom.

High school may have been where Peter Parker started off as a crime fighter, but his most memorable stories took place after that. He didn't even meet two of his most prominent love interests (Gwen and MJ) until he had already been in college. I get that they want to emphasize that Spider-Man is basically a kid compared to the other superheroes in this universe, but they could have conveyed that perfectly fine with a college setting.

I get that they're eventually going to have him grow out of his high school life by the end of Phase 3, but why do we need an entire movie involving his life as a high school sophomore or whatever? It's not like Tom Holland is too young to play a college student.

It just seems like they've really been pushing the high school aspect of Spider-Man's life on us ever since the Ultimate comics.

I'm still interested in seeing this movie, but having him be in high school again just seems like a waste to me.

THIS! I wholeheartedly agree with you. I am a big fan of Spidey and I enjoyed all of the previous films, but I want to see them expand more into his College stage in life. I want to see a Norman Osborn in his prime, not an old man who looks nothing like him, dies within the first 30 minutes and passes the torch of the Goblin to his son, Harry. (Amazing Spider-man 2 anyone?) There is no denying that Willem Dafoe was EXCELLENT as Norman, he brought that crazy lunacy characteristic of him in the Raimi trilogy. If possible, have Norman be the set up for a possible Sinister Six spin-off with Spidey involved. I was so pissed that they once again scrapped the Amazing Spider-man films. We were so close to seeing the Sinister Six on the big screen.

If it's true what they say that these new Spider-man films will play out like the Harry Potter movies, then we can expect to see Tom Holland eventually graduate high school and move on too college. If Marvel wants to do this right, they need to have him graduate and move on to college by the 3rd movie. I am also hoping that they stray away from MJ for now. We've seen her before, let's have another love interest get the spotlight. Betty Brant would be cool.

Well what I think is that MCU movies have a good timeline, like each year in the real world is a year for them. We arent getting Spider-Man movies back to back each year so I believe they'll have one or two movies in highschool and depending what grade and and the gap between movies we'll have him in college in no time. I just think it is important to set him up right for the MCU because he will be going longer than Tobey and Andrew.

reply

It's unnecessary for him to be in high school again or even college. I'd like to see him after graduating college trying to balance Spider-Man and life.

reply

True but it would be cool to have an actual Spider-man franchise this time around. What I mean by that is more than 2-3 movies. Tom looks to be in it for the long run, like you said. Imagine getting a Spider-Verse film or a Sinister Six film done right?

IMO, if Spider-man Homecoming does great, the next one shouldn't be too over the top, have some minor villains like Chameleon and Scorpion. By the 3rd of 4th movie, we should see Norman in this universe, possibly Black Cat too? I would like to see that.

I would of liked it too as one of my favorite Spider-Man cartoons was the short lived one on MTV. I believe it had NPH voicing Spider-Man and only lasted 1 season but it took place when he was in college with his friends MJ and Harry.

reply

I would have loved Amazing Spider-Man to be college like the 90s cartoon.

With Parker in the MCU, it is just not possible to make in college aged. He gets his powers in high school which means he would have had them during the Battle of NY. Stark would have found him and likely recruited him during that time, just like he found in in Civil War.

The past movies never really showcased him being a high school student. Toby was barely in high school or came off like a high school student.

Andrew seemed too old for high school and his school life revolved around Gwen. Didn't really see him have much outside of her and the Flash scenes.

Absolutely!

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

peter was in college in spider 1 and 2 (3 im not sure).

i want to see him as a wealthy working man like he is now in the comics.
we dont need to make him a broke cameraman on every film. today he is the head of Parker Industries and a billionaire.

I've seen some people groan at the premise of Peter being in high school again. I can understand the complaint, but honestly, I feel that this is necessary. In the last 5 years, the Spidey brand hasn't faired too well. The comics are hit and miss from what I've seen, the movies have had their reputation damaged, I'm not gonna get started on the Ultimate cartoon and since the other Marvel heroes took off thanks to the MCU, Spider-Man's lost a bit of his dominance despite being the most marketable superhero. I'm just glad that Spidey's getting some of his dominance back and if the PS4 game and Homecoming have anything to go by, I can't wait for more Spidey.

Plus we also haven't actually seen Peter grow up and mature outside of the comics. Most previous adaptations either started out with him already in college or about to graduate high school.

Its amazing how people hang around message boards of movies they dont like

I'm ready for a college age Peter Parker/Spider-Man, one I thought we were sure to get had they continued the Amazing Spider-Man series of films. High school Spidey was the least interesting era in my opinion.

When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

If you think about it, NO Spider-Man movie even went INTO DEPTH of Peter in high school. Sure it showed various MOMENTS of him interacting with people in high school, but it doesn't show his life in high school, and interacting with other students other than Harry, MJ (or Gwen in TASM) and Flash.

but it doesn't show his life in high school, and interacting with other students other than Harry, MJ (or Gwen in TASM) and Flash.

That's because most of his highschool life consisted of him getting picked on or rejected by girls. We don't need an entire movie about that. Frankly that's one of the reasons I didn't want a highschool setting. I hated highschool. I hated people picking on me. I don't want an entire movie that reminds me of that horrible time in my life.

1, 2 Freddy's coming for you. 3, 4 better lock your door.

reply

Really? That's the reason you don't want a high school setting? It reminds you of your crappy high school life?

That's not the Marvel/Sony's problem, that's your problem. Get over it, it was high school, it's not that big a deal.

reply

It's not just that. I mean I want the story of him and Flash becoming friends. I want him flirting with girls he is attracted to and not doing so awkwardly. I want to see other side characters from the comics who haven't been done yet. But that isn't going to be done in a highschool setting.

To be fair, this is how the comics were too. Peter spent maybe 20 issues in high school before graduating and moving onto college.

The bulk of the Spider-Man story was actually told in college.
