He was great as crooked old Basterd Arlo Givens in tv show Justified

reply

Yeah he was great in Justified but as stated by others, totally miscast for his part on this show. Can't blame him though, stupid director, lazy writers and enept casting director(s).

RJB was SEVERELY miscast in this.....

Terribly cast. He sounded almost exactly like Arlo Givens. Dmitri mentioned briefly that he spent much time growing up in the US (I think NY, where the actor is from). I'd bet that this was not originally part of Dmitri's backstory, but put in to explain his accent. Though I find it hard to think that Barry could not pull off a Russian accent that, even if no better than Walter Koenig's as Mr. Chekov, would have been more credible than the Harlan County via NYC accent he used.

RJB's casting as a Russian is honestly the worst casting I can think of. It was funny that his character had one of his lackeys beat up an action star for offending all of Russia, especially since his casting offends Russians, and not just the Russian writing this post.

And for God's sake, couldn't they have at least taught him to pronounce the Russian word for 'niece' correctly? When he said "Plem-yuh-NEET-suh!" instead of "Plem-YAH-nit-suh," my verbal reaction would get me banned from IMDb if I posted it here. It's bad enough that one would expect him to use a term of endearment rather than just saying "Niece!" (at the very least, he'd say "My niece," "my dear niece," that sort of thing), but to mispronounce it? Those in charge couldn't have gotten one of the 600,000 Russians in Southern California to teach him to say that one lousy word properly?

You're right, he can't be blamed, but wow, did they tank that one - and the excuse of how much time Sokolov spent in New York just didn't cut it.
