Disappointing Araki Film - But appeals to the masses

I've been a fan of Araki since the 90s. It seems like there progression of his to appeal to the masses more. This one appeals the most. There is little to question, not too much mystery, peppered with typical Araki-esque vignettes and nonchalant gay themes. Mysterious skin was the first film I saw of his that seemed to have a linear plot line that was easy to follow. Everything else that preceded these required re-watching many times to catch various subtleties and find inner meaning.

I was hoping he would return to his roots a bit more with this film, but it just seemed to be very watered down. But if this leads to a broader career, more power to him.

You think that the way the story unfolds in this movie is linear? It jumps around from current day to flashbacks almost every few minutes. Do you think you might be feeling a little hipster rage now that his name is become more recognizable? It sounds like it to me. For the record, I've been a fan of Araki since seeing The Living End on VHS in the early 90s.

I was a fan before you were even born.

That's impossible. You came from my sack.

I don't get really anything that you're saying, he's an artist who has stayed true to his roots his entire career, I don't think he's the type of posturing artist who is preoccupied by who his films are appealing to. As artists get older their work can lose a type of youthful energy, but this is really only about superficial change. I thought it was a pretty great film tbh.
