It wasn't clear, to me, that he was gay. He was in need of some emotional outlet when he clearly wasn't getting it in his marriage. On the other hand, straight porn would have been a lot more acceptable to purchase at that time than gay porn.

He probably just looked at the men in the straight pornos. I don't think a married father from the 80's nonetheless, would have had the nerve to purchase gay porn.

It's very possible that he was doing one of three things:

1) Paying attention to the men in the porno mags… It happens. That's how I got my start when I was exploring my homosexuality/bisexuality as a preteen.

2) We never actually see what's inside the porn mags. Perhaps he pasted pics of men inside them but no one will know since the outside looks like a straight porn mag for dudes… Far-fetched, but it seems like something Gregg Araki would do.

3) He could force himself to beat off to straight porn. This was the 80s. Homosexuality was incredibly repressed in America at the time.

Plus this is Gregg Araki. There had to be at least ONE gay sex scene, and the gay kid wasn't a big enough character to get his own.
