Very unfortunate letdown, not worth the $9.99 rental
I never read the book so I'm not sure how it holds up to the original content but I'm very bummed out that everything I've been hearing about this movie is true.
It has such an interesting premise (from the trailer) and some of my favorite talent working on it. The story was so terrible though! It was just so all over the place and didn't seem to tie in at all! Every single character was boring to me. Shailene's was the only semi-interesting one. I honestly didn't care about the mom because she wasn't even someone that I loved to hate or that found interesting or wanted to know more about her- she was just annoying. Every time she spoke I wished she'd leave the scene.
It just didn't flow together well. I kept thinking "wait, what's going on? What's the point of this?" because the plot makes it seem like it focuses on two things: 1. The disappearance of Eva and 2. Cat's coming into her sexuality but, while these are apart of the plot, they weren't focused on nearly as much as I'd thought they'd be.
Just a very sloppily put together story, I think. It seemed like so many different ideas were there but they never quite tied together. Also very sad because Shailene is the main reason I watched this film but it was one of her worst/most boring performances I think.
