Another good article - re: patents and cloning

Cosima had little time in episode 110 to check up on the patent info given that she was in a rush to inform Sarah because Sarah was about to make a deal with Rachel.

I always enjoy reading articles about science and Orphan Black and the relationship between the two! This article was interesting.

I do, however, feel like this person missed part of the reason for the BIG reveal of the patent. We've all already discussed how unrealistic is it is to patent a human being made from an illegal cloning experiment. It would hold absolutely no weight, basically anywhere- and if they were to be found out by WTO, WHO and every other governing body, those involved with the experiment would be in a heap of trouble.

In my mind- the purpose of the patent reveal and Cosima's rush to tell Sarah was to expose the nefarious dealings of DYAD and Neolution, to inform Sarah not to trust anyone involved. They painted themselves as creators of human life and that they cared about the clones and Leekie was "promising" (with fingers crossed behind his back) autonomy to the clones. All the while, the experiment would continue behind the clones' back, rendering them "blind" to the study once again. I felt like it was more of a way of calling bullsh*t, as Cosima likes to do. I could easily be wrong and welcome any other thoughts!

(And like "Bille" said, she didn't exactly have a ton of time to research patent laws- this was more of an urgent, need to inform situation.)

"This organism and derivative genetic material is restricted intellectual property."

If you take a look at Rachel's proposal from episode 410, she's proposing that the clones be treated as property. She does not seem to realize that she is included.

There was some loose talk of countries which do not have any cloning laws. The general attitude seems to be that the Neolutionists think they get away with anything, irregardless of local or international law.

When Luthair Paendrag arrived in Seanchan, the continent was under constant warfare with many shifting alliances and the Aes Sedai there taking part in these struggles. One of then, Deain, felt she could benefit by allying with him and created the first a'dam, so that he could use the power of the Aes Sedai in battle. She herself became damane several years later, when the first sul'dam were discovered.
