He was all about being involved and then he disappeared, did I miss the explanation for his departure?

Cal took Kira to Iceland in episode 302. In episode 310, they were joined by Sarah, Siobhan, and Kendall. Cal remained in Iceland when the other four returned. However, Cal has not been seen on screen since episode 302.

Another more cynical way of looking at it is that the actor who plays Cal, Michiel Huisman, is paid more money to appear on Game of Thrones, and he therefore gives that show the higher priority.

I think he'll be back in this last season. He is no longer needed in GOT so i believe we will see hom again here.
