I have no beef with Cosima and Delphine.I am pleased she is returning. However I got the impression from watching the Orphan Black after show that there was a strong movement among LGBT fans to revive her.The suggestion by the LGBT crowd is that to many LGBT characters are being killed off on TV series. Did the showrunners always plan to revive Delphine or did they cave into pressure from LGBT fans? I repeat that I have nothing against Delphine returning. The actress who plays her is very attractive.
I know people definitely think they caved. I have a feeling they'd admit to it, if that were the case. All I know for sure was that immediately after she got shot- they went back and forth between saying it had to be a tragic story to saying there was no body or she was "Orphan Black dead". They said many times that the story and EB's schedule would ultimately dictate her return- that it would only happen if it would advance and better the story. I'm guessing they do have a plan for her and I eagerly await it's reveal!
It is awfully hard to come up with a coherent answer to that question when Delphine has been gone all season, we don't know who shot her, we don't know who has her, we don't why she was shot or captured, and we don't know if she's become more good or more evil. You'd think if they were going to bring her back they'd have done it sooner, instead of having her gone for a whole season. Is she going to be gone for most of next season too? Has EB's calendar suddenly become more OB friendly?
They definitely planned to bring her back. One, this season was written before the whole 100 mess, and two, right after the season 3 finale the showrunners were saying she was dead, despite not showing her die. If she was really dead they would have shown it. Classic fake-out behavior. The actress had a lot of other projects and was unavailable until 409, but i'm guessing Delphine was in limbo till they knew if they could use her or not.
When lightning strikes the sea, why don't all the fish die?
I think the writers always had the intention to bring her back. They didn't cave imo, they were limited by Evelyne's work on other shows. They were practically waiting for her to get some free time to shoot, since they refused to give us a definite kill such as Paul's, and they refused to say that she is dead at the end of season 3. They always knew she is coming back, they just didn't know when.
I disagree with the LGBT community tho, there are many characters, straight or gay that are getting killed off, their opinion shouldn't influence any writer.
I think it's the ratio of straight to gay characters (which there are obviously many more straight characters), and the periodic gay character death that makes people go hmmm. It seems bad when there are fewer gay characters and some die. But, I guess I don't think it necessarily IS bad. (My opinion) Personally- I think, if it advances the story and it makes sense, kill anyone regardless of their race, sexuality or anything. It's entertainment and I, personally, want to see good shows that make sense.
I agree, when The 100 killed one of their gay characters and one actor of race it was of totally different matter. Both actors were busy with other movies or shows, but people don't get that and take it personally, and think it was because of their sexuality or race. I don't think that any show does that, and characters die all the time and we should all get over it and stop dividing like that. I don't see Cophine's relationship as a gay relationship, i see it as a relationship and i ship it very hard.
You made me laugh! HA! You ship it very hard! HA HA HA! Me too, oddly enough. I never liked Delphine until S3! I know some people HATE their relationship and some people LOVE it. It made for some interesting episodes, that's for sure.
I think you're right- there's a population (not ALL LGBT, mind you) that takes the deaths of the few gay characters to heart. I can understand, since there aren't many gay characters. But at the same time- people in shows need to die. I don't know if you watch The Walking Dead- but they've killed off so many major, straight characters and no one really complained- Shane, Dale, Lori, Andrea, Hershel, The Governor (just to name a few). Kill off one gay character who's been in a handful of episodes (and was annoying in my opinion) and people get upset. Statistically- it hurts when you have a small number of gay characters and some die. BUT, on a whole- I don't think it's done because they were gay. I think it's done because it moves a story.
I agree 100%. Straight characters die all the time and nobody complains, but that still has to do with labeling of things, as we people always do. The fact that there are very few gay characters and couples on tv doesn't help, we're not there yet, but we are starting to be aware that they should be equally included in movies and tv shows. I don't like that when a character of race died in The 100, many people complained that his death wasn't decent, he died in the mud and many were offended by that. People take everything personally nowadays, but i can't even count the amount of white characters who died like animals in the movie industry. It doesn't offend me at all, nor it should, it serves a purpose and as you said it moves, and adds more to the story.
Yeah, i'm a shipper since season 1, and i love Delphine's character, and even though i'm straight, Cophine is my fav couple atm! 😄
As a lesbian... supporter.... I now ship them. I also shipped Sarah and Dizzy until she *beep* off that ep and also, now I don't exactly know HIS deal or where his allegiance is?!
I'm curious to see how deep Delphine is in to this whole mess.... I hope they explain some in the season finale.
I don't think Dizzy will be back. He was just a pawn to the story. On a side note, where the hell is Cal?! I can't live with the fact that the actor appeared in just 2 episodes of this GoT season as a minor character, and based on that he couldn't film for OB? The hell... unbelievable.
I was wondering the same about Cal! I guess he didn't fit into the story?! But he took Kira to Iceland before.... so- where was he when they went back to Iceland at the end of S3?
I wasn't sure about Dizzy either. He seemed very invested in the bots. Either he, or someone he cares about has one.... I can't imagine he'd just slink away. But at this point- there's so much else going on, I could see them glazing over him.
I was looking for a post like this. It does seem like every time a gay character gets killed on a show, there's a uproar. So the writers can be put in a Catch 22. If we have a gay character or characters on a show where ppl die, we can't kill them or else we will get major grief. For me I thought Delphine should have stayed dead. I just can't stand when shows kill characters and they don't stay dead. Loses its impact. Alias did the same damn thing 2 or 3 times. I liked those characters, but it was still cheap stunts. I am sure most ppl liked that Delphine is back. Count me as not one of them. I thought it was very powerful seeing her get gunned down.
If the writers wanted Delphine to be kidnapped and gone for a season, they could have done that without having someone shoot her. For those who say Delphine's return was planned, I'll point out that Delphine was shot and saved by characters that weren't introduced until season four. The sudden disappearance of Shay was even more bizarre, and makes it look like these decisions are being based on actress availability and not story.

Correct.Did anyone stop to think what would have happened to Delphine if Krystal Goderitch's cell phone did not go off? There would have been no time for her to be rescued. The actress who plays Shay Davydov playing on AMC's Turn Washington's Spies
That would have worked better for me. Instead of this miraculous rescue that would have been late if not for the cell phone ring. The whole scene was silly.
As silly as it was, it was convenient. And i happen to have many situations in life where timing plays a great deal in life's direction. TV shows are not real life tho, therefore they tend to add more silliness to the timing of situations.
And i still think the writers were open to have Delphine back if she gets available. The reason they shot her was probably because they didn't want to leave another loose end. They let many actors disappear very often without any explanation, so this was a safe bet with Delphine.
It is true that there was huge fluke element to her surviving but that is acceptable to me plotwise. There were two competing factions. I imagine one was sent to kill her, one was sent to prevent her being killed, arrived late, but got lucky anyway.
The only thing that struck me as rewritten was that I assumed the killer was someone we would recognise. (I had guessed Scott or the rebound girl, more likely Scott when rebound girl did not reappear.). Hiding the identity and the cryptic statement implied the identity was important. In the end it was just an enforcer, hardly a reveal, nor gave any special meaning to Delphines cryptic statement as far as I can see.
Didn't she die after getting shot in the season 3 finale?
Well, that's what *I* saw, but apparently getting shot and dying are two different things, especially if your name is Krystal (we can't all be in the healing arts, after all).
Anyway, do catch up with Season 4 hon, where you'll see enough of Delphine to not wonder anymore if she is dead or not.

The showrunner has already stated that the story lines were all written, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. This to me, means that of course it was planned for her return. Cosima and Delphine are a couple, one way or another, and a means to an end.
Interesting... Means it hasn't been started to film, also, the actors aren't signed for the season? Seems strange, that. Seems as though I have read that actors sign on for a season at a time, unless it's a main character, of course. Some characters that are only on 1 or 2 episodes, but Delphine could be a semi-main character...
I think it's probably a budgetary thing. They didn't have enough money to give Evelyn a contract to make her exclusive so they lost her availability when she got the lead in another tv series, X Company, and they've had to write around it.
I think it has hurt the story and may have hurt the ratings as well. The ratings were way down all season 4 but spiked, perhaps coincidentally, for the two episodes that Evelyn appeared in.
But I'm also kind of glad it happened because I think Evelyn's absence and also Paul being killed off has allowed Donnie to become a bigger part of the show and I love Donnie paired with anyone, Alison, Helena, Felix, Cosima, Krystal, etc.
Filming for Season 5 will probably begin in the next couple of weeks. Last year they started shooting on September 28th, I think this year they'll likely start on Sep 26 or Oct 3.
