Somebody like Dana (Rose Byrne) would NEVER be available for dating...

Seriously, that was the most implausible aspect of the film, and there were several.

Why? Simple: she's drop dead gorgeous, still young (early 30's), smart (works at Google, right?) and quite polite/fun to be with (not a total douche).

So either she's:
- taken (dating somebody already or married)
- not interested in dating anyone right now (career focused)

Either one, she would just not be available. I mean, she would have guys lining up everyday to ask her out. And not only at work, but everywhere she would go.

That someone like Owen Wilson would be able to pick her up so easily is too insulting. He would have been reported for stalking in real life after their first "random" encounter. Maybe a really smooth talker like Vaughn would be more believable getting away with that, but not Wilson.

I thought the movie made it pretty obvious that she was not interested in dating and then she changed her mind when she happened to fall for Owen Wilson, thus she "became" available. Happens just like this for some people in the real world, too.

reply

She was too much of a workaholic, that's the problem. Also a lot of the people working in Google in the film, didn't seem, well, very red blooded.

I disagree with the "not a total douche" part. She was a complete bitch to Owen Wilson the first few times she interacted with him. If a girl treated me like that, I would definitely not be interested in dating her, no matter how hot she was

reply

I don´t agree with you that she was a complete bitch to Owen Wilson at first. Granted, she was rejecting his flirtatious romantic overtures, but she did so in a relatively tactful and civil way. Much better than a lot of women in her shoes would have been. I mean it is kind of hard to be nicer than nice when you are trying to make it clear to a guy that you are not interested in him romantically.

reply

That's not really true. It's possible that a good looking girl doesn't have many good options

That's exactly what she initially told him. So what's the issue. He persisted and she changed her mind. Surely, still a woman's prerogative.

You don't live in Silicon Valley, do you?

Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?

reply

she seemed more like a woman who dates old rich dudes to me, I dont think she would be interested in looser party dudes either.

reply

I tend to agree with the OP, although sometimes career girls like that can be intimidating and unavailable.

reply

1. she could have been lesbian, which is where i thought they would go with it when she was so put off by his flirts.
2. as the saying goes....no matter how good she looks, somewhere, there is a guy tired of her sh!t

It's not impossible to think someone like her would be available. You can probably find one out there on eharmony, match, *beep* etc.

Impossible would be Google accepting 2 interns who just signed up to the university of Phoenix.

Her character probably dated a bunch of silicon valley jerks during her entire tenure there. That's what biff Tannen and the rest of the males in the movie resembled. Nerdy, rich, or arrogant pricks. A different combo from each. Owens Wilson was neither.

Owen Wilsons character was plucked out of that Silicon Valley scene, so he's "different, and not like the other guys"... and he eventually wins her over.

It's the rom-com formula. Not that hard to believe in.
