Google looks like hell to work at

All those colors and weird sports games.. chills me to the bone. Call me anti-fun but I wouldn't want to work there, damn.

I'm sure the feeling is mutual!

I think working at google looks like a lot of fun.

reply

not to get personal but my OBGYN'S daughter works for Google and she's in a up-level position; she basically does everything you see when you open up the website it self; also not to get political he's (he is such a great doctor that "sometimes" we talk politics, and he's very conservative but he loves his daughter that he's proud she has accomplished so much in her life, even though its a liberal place to work)Any way I asked him if his daughter is happy w/her job - he just sort of nudge and said well she makes good money - and he left it that. I think she has his "beliefs" but Google gave her a great offer she could NOT refuse. I'm a registered Independent myself, but if I had to put a "real" label on my political reliefs I would be considered a "Libertarian" - I like Ron Paul and his son Rand Paul (who both have different views) - ANYTHING is better than what we have now!

reply

I'm not a fan of how they force various political themes/messages on certain dates & specific search engine queries etc. It's usually a 50/50 on whether I agree with those. Usually not.

reply

It is slightly creepy and infantile. Enforced jollity is never fun.

Also sod libertarianism, neoliberalism, neoconservativism and all the sick American right wing political philosophies - lets go for a system which actually looks after the poor and working class, not just big business.

reply

If you think libertarianism is about big business, you're ill-informed or just ignorant. What we have in this country, from both major parties, is corporatism. Corporations write most of the bills that get through congress, then bribe their congressmen to pass it. And of course all the presidents are also corporate shills, and sign these bills that favor large multinational corporations and hurt small businesses.

reply

Libertarianism
is anarchism for right wingers unfamiliar with the concept or
embarrassed by it. Big business control IS the inevitable fruit of
libertarianism - nature abhors a vacuum and corporations and/or crime
will seize that power. American politics is a bizarre species indeed.
One of the few parts of the world where poor people regularly fight
against their own interests, and let the rich rule them.

There are reasons that the majority of Americans are not taught geography or a proper overview of the political history of other countries.

Come to think of it, the most radical thing you lot could do is get vast numbers of Americans off legal and illegal medication - then they would see things as they are.

You don't get a revolution by standing in front of a tank with a shopping bag.

Libertarian is just what conservatives call themselves to avoid the stigma of holding discriminatory opinions that have been out of style for decades. Notice how you see 'libertarians' run on the Republican ticket, but never with the Democrats.

He's still lookin' goood, eatin' them sandwiches all the tiiiime.

reply

Libertarianism is just another fecked up American political doctrine that has no real relevance to the rest of the world, has already been thought up before, and better, and which will no doubt

"Notice how you see 'libertarians' run on the Republican ticket, but never with the Democrats."

I don't really "notice". All I see is two hard right wing neo-liberal corporate parties with barely a cigarette paper between them.

lol the Cold War turned people into idiots saying words like they're what's important.

Quite a bit of the US relies on socialized programs. Public schools. Medicare/medicaid (but not for anyone else because the Affordable Healthcare Act was screwed up so badly to even get it passed). And of course, the armed forces.

The US handles these things so incredibly bad. Because, somehow, running on a ticket that advertises less taxes translates into a better country?...no. "Hey, let's start a socialized program!"..."Hey, let's give it just enough money to exist but not really get any help because we can't stop bickering!"...while saying "let's have enough armaments to literally remove Earth from existence instead of keep people from hunger! That'll teach the other countries which we rely on to have their own ideas and not hate us even further!"

...and the rest of the world moves on while our country is still struggling with operational goddamn definitions. A big thanks to everyone that is horrified of change and scared of learning.

CAPITALISM: Where some are rich and some are poor
SOCIALIM: Where everyone is poor

Idiot: someone who thinks socialism will make him rich

reply

"Idiot: someone who thinks socialism will make him rich"

Idiot is originally the Greek for someone who doesn't vote.

There are more choices than Hyper Capitalism (where very few people are well off) and Communism.

What the *beep* are you on about? You could've just written you're a libertarian if you so much want to tell everyone. This babble has nothing to do with the movie or the topic of this thread.

reply

My cousin worked at Google and left because....he was TOO LIBERAL. Shocking.

The impression I got was that Google has a very specific range of ideology and you had better agree with it or pretend you do.

I don't think it would be a good place to work for a libertarian, conservative, or traditional liberal.

I think you almost have to be a hard-core believer in an olygarchy to work there.

Or, like I said, pretend.

reply

That's all fascinating I'm sure,but...What has any of that have to do with the movie? I think you might be on the wrong site..

reply

I agree. Also, it's worth seeing through the facade: all the colour schemes and new-age crapology won't disguise the fact that it's just another huge business. Money is everything, and if it takes a slightly off-beat, non-traditional approach to get the dough, then that's what they'll do.

reply

I don't know if you've ever watched the Prisoner, but it's very like "the Village" in the series. The Village is multicoloured, and jolly music plays all the time, but it's still a prison.

Google has a lot to answer for the NSA business as well. Look it up.

Hilarious to read people praising communism/socialim and whining about eeeeevil bis businesses.....on IMDB, a privately run, for profit web site using broadband services provided by a for profit ISP on a laptop built by a for profit company.

In your socialist utopia none of this would exist. Apple wouldn't exist. Google wouldn't exist. IMDB wouldn't exist. Nothing you use in your daily lives would exist without capitalism.

I don't use Apple, and avoid Google which is a surveillance mechanism.

A lot of people who work at Google make the money, get burned out after a few years, and then split and work somewhere else.

Many former Google interns and Google employees noted the accuracy of the company environment depicted in the movie, but also pointed out that the internship process is nothing like that shown in the movie.http://mashable.com/2013/06/09/google-the-internship/

Great. Another thread hijacked so that politics could be discussed. Please take all political discussions elsewhere. I opened this thread to read about Google as a workplace and to see how accurately the film portrayed it. Not to read what looks like a horribly written report from an 8th grade social studies class.

Yeah because there's no politics ever. Life is about politics. Everybody plays politics.

To tell you the truth i stopped using Google as a search engine after watching this movie, i am sixty years old and just because of my age your going to treat me the way they do in the film.... sod that, if indeed Google only employs children then more shame you

reply

It employs young people because they tend to be more inclined towards modern technology. That's starting to change, but that has been the case for roughly the past 2 decades.

But really, you stopped using a search engine because of a comedy film?
