If by "word" you mean the word "heat" when used as a movie title, then you better head over to the "Heat" (1995) board and rag on Mann for lifting the title from any of the five movies or eight TV episodes from various shows that preceded Mann's use of the word as a title.

Heat, the De Niro one, is one of my ALL time favorite films.

But to be fair, there was a film called Heat starring Burt Reynolds that came out about ten years before the DeNiro/Pacino Heat.

This is the remake.

reply

Fair call.

you all know that this is a remake of Heat with Burt Reynolds.
And that the book it is based on is called Edged weapons, by legendary scriptwriter William Goldman.
So just hope this version is closer to the very cool book.

reply

EXACTLY! The fact that they're calling this HEAT means they're trying to cash in on Michael Mann's epic. Who the hell remembers "Heat" with Burt Reynolds? Nobody. Because nobody saw it. Next up, Ghostbusters, starring two dumbasses and a talking gorilla.

reply

I was so excited when I noticed this IMDb entry...a Heat remake with Jason Statham in it! Then I read the description and wanted to cry.

reply

A Heat remake with Jason Statham in it didn't want to make you cry?

reply

This.

reply

They're calling it HEAT because that was the title of the book, which was published at least 10 years before Mann's film.

reply

THANK YOU!

Although, let's face it, Mann's movie has so eclipsed the novel and first film adaptation in the public mind that I suspect Statham's update will undergo a title change before hitting theaters next year.

It all comes down to familiarity. Audiences by and large have never even heard of William Goldman's novel and so the title HEAT would only confuse things.

My prediction: They'll end up going with the title that the book was published under in the UK, which was EDGED WEAPONS. Let's see if I'm right.

Best post ever!

"Who the hell remembers "Heat" with Burt Reynolds?"
Apparently a lot of people... including me, who happened to just finish watching it, immediately, as in 2 minutes before, I started in watching this and royally farked with my mind when it started in the identical way as Heat did.
Talk about trippin'!?
I have a giant movie collection, but still, the chances of lining these two up back to back is unreal when barely remembered Heat from not watching it in a few years, at least.. and never seeing this Wild Card before.

Hey ya'll, we's gotz a camera buts no tripod...
Well let's make a 'found footage' film!

reply

They really should change it, I thought this was a remake of the 1995 action classic Heat with DeNiro and Pacino. When I find out it isn't I am very confused. There is other slang terms for 'heat from the police' they could use for a title.

You're a troll.

reply

I'm just glad this is NOT a remake of the Michael Mann classic.

Agreed! HEAT doesn't need a remake....it still better than ALL other movies within this genre.

reply

If you're thinking of the Michael Mann movie, you really need to READ about the movie you are posting about, because this is an adaptation of a William Goldman novel from the mid-1980s.

reply

We know....it needs to find it's own title and not try to trick people into thinking it's the GOOD Heat.

reply

why?

reply

Um...My post says why!

reply

That's not a reason why it has to change its name, your not the boss of it.

I don't think they where actually trying to make people think 'OMG its a remake of Michael Mann's Heat', they just reused the title from the original film.

What exactly would would they achieve by tricking people into thinking it was a remake Mann's Heat?

reply

That's not a reason why it has to change its name, your[YOU'RE] not the boss of it.

That's your response? I'm not the boss of it? LOL Okay JR....

reply

I'll be honest i'm just being a bit of dick with that comment as I was kinda bored.

But I don't see why they need to change the name. Plenty of films share the same title and if people go to watch it and get pissed because they thought it was a remake of Mann's film then thats their fault for not reading the synopsis.

I mean come on it just a bloody title it doesn't really mean that much.

and picking up on my dodgy grammar is a little sad. This is an IMDB forum not a bloody thesis, why should it matter if i put your instead of you're, you still knew what I was talking about.

"...if people go to watch it and get pissed because they thought it was a remake of Mann's film then thats their fault for not reading the synopsis."

You're not being realistic. A bad or confusing title could turn away patrons which means the movie earns less money -- maybe far less -- which is not the intention when you make a film.

reply

why do care how much money the movie makes?

LOL. "You're not the boss of it" is probably one of the greatest posts I've ever seen on imdb. That was awesome. :)

Takin' out the trash, trailer park style!!

Technically speaking Heat was a remake...

Anyway, a lot of movies share the same title, and the word "Heat" is not copyrighted by Michael Mann either, and it's not like this movie is going to do anything harmful to Mann's film anyway. After this is released that film will still be held in high regard like it is now.

reply

It's bad enough that people think you're talking about the movie with Burt Reynolds...we don't need another HEAT muddying the waters...

reply

It's remake of pretty good Burt Reynalds movie called Heat, based on good book by Goldman. So what if they use that title, it's already been used a few times. I just hope they do the book justice.

reply

Yeah... But to be honest, Heat (1995) needed a more honoring title anyway.

reply

That's true. They should have called it something like "God Moving over the Face of the Waters", after the stupendous closing track. Then again, that would have been a bit of a crazy title for a cop thriller
