Loved This Film

Spolier Alert- if you haven't seen this film and plan on doing so, please stop reading this comment. I may include something here that might spoil the film for you and I wouldn't want to ruin your experience.

This film was incredibly powerful for me because it kept going back to the same question: what if your life depended on a stranger? Or even someone you didn't care for? It's such an amazing story of how two people had to stay together to survive. It was emotionally draining for me because I kept feeling like I wanted to give up with each challenge they faced. This one has brought a lot of tears!

I'm interracially married and I think it definitely attracted me to this movie. I don't know why the film was cast the way it was. I haven't read the book and I have no idea if the couple is also interracial in the book (I imagine it's never even mentioned). Anyway, Idris Elba and Kate Winslet made a great couple. But this film likely wouldn't have been made 10 years ago; and certainly not 20. I just thought it was a great story with plenty of beautiful scenery.

I was shocked at the apparent "so so" reception this film has received. The performances by the two very good actors were both strong. I didn't even know about the romance angle going into it and was pleasantly surprised. If you think about it, black male/ white female romantic pairings in mainstream films and television is still embarrassingly rare, especially when race is completely ignored/ irrelevant to the plot. A very solid film I would recommend.

As for the interacial aspect, from IMDB Trivia for this film:

After Michael Fassbender and Margot Robbie dropped out of the project, they were replaced by Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike. However, both dropped out of the project after it was put into turnaround. Idris Elba and Kate Winslet were eventually cast.

It was a very good film I agree.

It's great that race was never made an issue of in this movie, even after it was cast with these two leads... we see them and they see themselves and one another as simply human beings trying to survive and to connect...

It was a lot more engagging than I thought it would be... Although the girls sitting in the row behind me couldn't stop giggling at Ben's (Idris) expense whenever he'd do or say anything sentimental or struggle with his emotions... I guess they couldn't handle seeing his sensitive side 😂

Very good movie. Good story, good acting and good scenery. That being said a few flaws IMO. I live in the country and know how hard it is to get wet or damp wood burning. But every time they needed a fire there it was. And I am not talking a small fire. Fires to cook on and keep warm. Then toward the end of the movie she could not walk anymore. In the next scene there he is pulling her on a homemade type sled. Out in the middle of nowhere where did he come up with everything he needed to make that sled?

just seen this was on channel 4 this week hear was an OK film I give the mountain between us a 6/10

reply

I liked it more than you. Give it a 7.5/10

But then Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses.

reply

It was okay. It's not the most ambitious film but the relatively strong performances by the lead actors carry it.

Earlier in the thread you said, "I was shocked at the apparent 'so so' reception this film has received."

But here you say, "It was okay."

To me, "okay" is a "so so reception." Did you cool on the film as time went on?

reply

I like it. It drags a little after they are rescued and it's not the most exciting survival movie but it's a good movie. 7/10
