Whenever the cans-on-string are used in this movie, the string is at least partially limp/bent. This means it cannot transfer sound via vibration.

why shouldnt he be able to complain about the string? its still suppose to be a realistic detail and it fails and is bad and like this whole movie, its a detail they could make an effort to get use in a realistic way like walki talkis instead...but still even if the movie is about some supernatural stuff like ghosts and demons, the ordinary detalis shouldnt be failed...so yes, I get annoyed aswell with this.

If we can complain about details we would say this is a horrible movie:
- Parker commited suicide like 20 years ago (josh mother was young). And his estate ? if no inheritors it goes to the government. Including assets like a house. AFter some years of not paying taxes the city would take it and sell it. Somoebody would be living on it (or is it detroit ?). So how likely to find a house with 20 year old mummified bodies which has paid no taxes ?
- So you get hit four times with a wrench and nothing happens ? you get hit with a taser and you recover immediately ? you get hit with a bat in your head and nothing happens ? my 5 year old kid hits me a punch in my belly and takes me down ! (no amount of adrenaline keeps you up after such amount of hitting)
- So a women dies estrangled at your place and police detains nobody ? i mean, NOBODY, just questioning and next day you're out ? and by the way they don't question the only adult male ?
- And next day, after your kid wakes up, the one that was more than three months in "coma", you take him to school like nothing ever happened ?
- And by the way, he was sleeping next day with his brother like a regular kid with no trauma ? and when he has a nigthmare the first stupid question is to ask him what happened ? it would had been me, either i sleep with him or he sleeps with us for many nights.
There are more. But anyway, i liked the movie. I just felt they overused the suspense in some cases as well as with some cliches. And by the way, rose byrne is the worst mother ever.

In the first scene with the boys using the cans on strings in their bedroom, Foster says the string has to be taut - so yes, they were aware of how to use it, but I guess they forgot later on. Or the Further doesn't give a damn how physics works now?
