Ghosts in movies

If ghosts are can pass through walls etc, how come they can stand on floors?

Well you're talking about applying our concept of physics to supernatural beings from another dimension.
Just because ghosts can walk through a wall or fall through a floor it doesn't necessarily mean that they have to. This question gets asked ad nauseum on the 'Ghost' boards even though it's actually explained in the movie itself.
Patrick Swayze's character Sam meets another Ghost who can move objects. While trying to flick a bottle cap the other Ghost actually says 'you think you're crouched on that floor? You ain't got a body no more!' Sam can only interact with the physical world with his mind. He's only limited by his belief in his abilities. He can't move the bottle cap because he's trying too hard to do so yet he can walk on the floor and sit in furniture because he doesn't think for a second that he can't.

In short Ghosts can walk on floors yet through walls because they want to.
