Most obnoxious sound mixing...
I could barely hear the dialog, but then any sound effect or blaring music sting would practically blow out my speakers.
Loud doesn't equal scary.

I disagree. I heard the dialogue fine and the music was loud, but didn't almost blow out my speakers. Sounds like ya need an upgrade in your home theatre system. Or at least tweak your settings.

Just watched it, and not far in, my friend said, "I thought this was relatively big-budget. Why is the sound so horrible?"
When we were done I came to check out the message boards. I read him the title of this thread, and he laughed.
We also laughed over threads titled "Cans on a string don't work that way" and "Oedipus Complex" and "Anyone else laugh?" (without even opening that last one).

Seems it's like new way to make people jump out of their seats, when they can't find any good scripts, directing, they go for the loud obnoxious sound which makes watching the movie more ridiculous.

sharePublic service announcement: avoid The Quiet Ones. That movie is the same as Insidious 1/2 -- it will rape your ears. Tacky audio mixing is now apparently "horror".

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah it's a really annoying trend.
...And there's nothing wrong with my speakers. The mix is just that bad and stupid. Even certain lines were way too loud when they were going for a cheap startle, like Patrick Wilson walking into the room and saying 'Hey' was super loud with an obnoxious music cue, and then the rest of the conversation was barely audible. I had to adjust the volume way too much, and it's not like the movie was worth going through that.
I totally agree. It's not only a "cheap trick" to try to scare people watching, it's also very rude. I thought my ears would start to bleed...
shareThank you. I normally come to this site to check people's opinions of movies. But after watching Insidious 2, I came to see if anyone had trouble with the awful sound levels.
I thought it was my 5.1 surround system playing up. Part way through the movie, I had to continually adjust all the levels because of the inaudible dialogue and thunderous 'shock' sound fx. I had to sit through the whole movie with the remote constantly upping and lowering the sound level. Took me right out of the movie.
Enjoyed the first one, but this just went on and on and on with no variety of pace. I've seen (and heard) much better low-budget flicks.
In both movies, the music that plays when the red "Insidious" title comes on the screen is obnoxiously deafening in contrast to everything else. It's not startling, just irritating.
