These movies these days are annoying. Can barely hear the conversations, volume goes up, but when they try to scare you, gets so obnoxiously loud I need to lower volume back down. Repeat about 20 more times.
shareYes, absolutely. I understand the desire for dynamic audio, which is louder during the action, but it doesn't need to be ear-shattering, and the dialogue, in contrast, MUST be audible. Voices are, usually, a lot quieter than explosions and crashing orchestras - but, on the other hand, require more attention, since you don't have to make out words in an explosion - so the former should be mixed LOUDER than the latter.
shareYes, that is EXTREMELY annoying, and I found it especially so with this movie. So much whispering dialog, followed by ear splitting attempts at jump scares. I did hold the remote throughout the entire movie.

I actually turned it off for this reason. I was bored... but I have sat through worse. But it's late and people are sleeping and I can either wake everyone up or miss half of the dialogue.
I don't think my life will be incomplete not finishing this.

I did not play with the volume but I understand what you mean because I think its annoying too. I feel the same thing about the 'gets so the obnoxiously loud' of the first Insidious and The Conjuring also! All directed by James Wan. I remember that during The Conjuring, at some point, I got the feeling that I understood the way he was working his scares and stuff in horror. Not sure it was a positive of negative thing but we know he is talented and I think he should do other kinds of movies for some years. I love his works! And would like him to try something else.
Yes, audio design has been declining. They do this in TV shows, too. Loud music, quiet dialogue... These are my solutions:
1) For TV, buy one with volume auto-leveling feature. Many modern TVs have that. It works reasonably well.
2) For computers, on Windows 7 and up, there's a "Loudness equalization" feature. If you run Windows XP/2003 server or something, you can use VLC, which has a built-in volume equalization thing.
