Pregnancy Subplot

Anyone else bothered by the pregnancy subplot? I thought it added little to the story and I thought it was odd to think of 59-year-old Costner becoming a dad. It was only thrown in at certain times.

Thought it would've been better if they were having an affair?? (Not better as in morally, but made more sense)

I think (and my opinion is based on the tombstone of Jonathan Kent in "Man of Steel") that Costner was probably trying play younger than 59 in this movie. Maybe early 50's/late 40's. I reference the Jonathan Kent tombstone because it indicated he died at 44 years of age if I remember right, and Costner clearly looked older than 44 in that movie.

The grave is no bar to my call.

reply

Fair enough. But I just couldn't get 59-year-old Costner out of my mind.

Anthony Quinn and Tony Randall both had kids into their 70s....Maybe Sonny had that "Super sperm" thing working for him :-)

Kidding aside, I agree that it did not add much to the storyline. A simple relationship would have accomplished all they needed it to accomplish.

I think sonny and Vanessa getting married would have been fine with me.

When Ally first walked out I assumed she was his BA daughter football fanatic.

The pregnancy plot was completely unnecessary. Who really gave a crap if this guy had a girlfriend or if she was pregnant or not? I can't imagine any person on this planet thinking a movie about the NFL draft had to have any romance in it at all.

reply

Or a movie about boxing had to have any romance in it at all.

Oh, wait: Rocky.

I didn't think that was nearly as bad as the ridiculous subplot of a GM's widow demanding her GM son spread his father's ashes on the most stressful day of a GM's year.

reply

It was to add more stress to the already extremely stressful day, and it led to a couple humorous moments when they kept being interrupted in the store room. Also, it showed more character development.
