Did Bo Callahans friends go to his birthday party?
I'm confused did they not go or did they go and he was lying because the cops protected the football team? Having a debate right now

shareBo's name was on the record... why would cops kept the rest of the team off the records if they already have Team Captain and QB listed as present.
Besides, the whole mess happened because it was Bo's birthday party... so having those guys listed as present is to be expected and it wouldn't hurt them one bit. Especially considering neither Bo nor anyone of them is suspect in the robbery that took place during the event.
See the whole point of this treatment is that Weaver can never know for sure. Just like a jury that has to convict someone on the evidence in front of them and their own "black box" judgement, he has to make the call.
We do see some first hand issues with Callahan's character... mainly as he drops in the draft, but also with his hesitation when asked if winning is important to him. The $100 bill thing didn't seem to implausible either... he might not say anything at first because it's a under the table way to send the money, you might read the play book to the end, find the money, and think you shouldn't go flapping your mouth about it. If that was a mob boss who taped some money to your order of prosciutto, and you show up and announce, "Hey Don Guido, I got the $100 you taped to the meat paper last month," you'd probably be dead. But the point is the way they contrast Drew to Callahan, that most people will form their opinions on... not whether they somehow in a Holmsian moment uncover "the shocking truth".
You can read volumes written on juror decision making on this exact topic. Very little of it is concerned with whether "OJ" did it or not, but what decision the person in charge of his fate concluded.
It wasn't as much the hesitation with the question of if winning was important to him or not that wouldn't seem to be a big deal with me(if this was real and I was Kevin Costners character.) It would be the cliche answer, as if he is just saying what I would want to hear. Not really speaking honestly from how he really feels. And that's exactly how it seemed Keven Costners character took it.
shareIt's weak script writing. We are never sure if Bo Callahan is a bad guy and they never resolve the issue on him or any of the picks at the end of the movie. For all we know the linebacker and running back he takes are busts and they are out 3 #2 picks and Bo Callahan goes on to become Peyton Manning.

I love that script; it's better than O'Reilly (?) and his convoluted way of delivering information!

For *beep*'s sake, O'Reilly, what could

O'REILLY
Just talked to a kid in section 244. Do

SONNY
I'm not playing this game today.

SONNY
What the... get out of the suite, O'Reilly.
O'Reilly his handled by two ushers on either side of him. He pulls himself free.
O'REILLY
You want to know why he's hungry?
SONNY
Honestly, I don't...
O'REILLY
Says because he went to the concession

Turns out, he still ended up without one.
You want to know why he didn't get the hot

I don't have time for this, David Putney just...
Wait, why does he have a pet snake at the game?

His anaconda, Sonny! Think about it!
When you ask a question such as "how important is winning to you", I suspect what you're looking for is the passion, not the words.
Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
"When you ask a question such as "how important is winning to you", I suspect what you're looking for is the passion, not the words."
So,ing with something like if it's all about passion, you'd be okay with Bo replying with something like *beep* winning! I just go out there because I love the game, so it doesn't matter if I win or lose!"
Not likely....I'm guessing 100% of those questioned would say winning is "very important"...as I said, it is up to the scout/coach/GM, to determine the sincerity of the answer.

My take was that no, no one came to the birthday party. I think the rest of the team couldn't stand him. I think Sonny realized the teammates didn't attend the party for that reason and started questioning whether he wanted a guy like that on the team. A guy like that, even a marquee player, can have a devastating impact on a team if he's despised.
Also, the actor who played Bo is in his early thirties. Maybe they were tired of hearing his semi-creepy, evasive answers about why he was still in college. ("Well... you know, after high school, I traveled around a little bit... Worked as a lumberjack up in Oregon... started writing a novel....")
shareThe guy who played Vonte Mack is now close to 40 lol
He's a good actor and looks younger than his age but I still found that funny...and him to be damn small for a linebacker
Yes they did. The Police kept their names out of the official records so that these innocent student athletes would not be tarnished by what other people, not associated with the Wisconsin football team, did at/during the birthday party.
shareThe teammates did not go to the party. The former coach was evasive about it or else was clueless -- he apparently wanted to bask in the limelight of having produced a number 1 pick. When Sonny asked Bo on the phone, he was evasive -- he said he didn't remember a thing about that night. So, his team mates can't stand him, and he is also a liar. They even previously described how he didn't read the play book for the other team, and when they called him on it for not knowing about the $100 bill, he tried to bluff his way out of it and did not admit the truth, unlike all the other candidates.

My interpretation was that the answer is probably not.
Callahan either really didn't remember, which suggests wild off-field character issues -- or he lied to spare himself from having to explain why no teammates were there.
Either way, GM Sonny took it as a major character flaw.
They did not go to the birthday party. It was not explicitly stated. When he called him at the draft and asked Bo about whether or not his friends came, Bo looked panicked, and paused while he thought up the lie about not remembering anything from the night. I think it was pretty clear from Bo's reaction that he was lying, and Coster knew it. The same kind of lie he told about the 100 dollar bill. As someone else pointed out, why would his name be given to the cops, but not his teammates? Bo's responses to Coster's questions and his reaction to not getting picked first, combined with everything else we learn about him during the film all support the notion that he is going to be a bust. He is not a true leader like Brian Drew, who was clearly the superior QB, both in terms of athletic prowess and that undefinable "it" factor that makes one man a leader of men.
shareHe was absolutely lying, no matter how drunk you got you wouldn't forget everyone who was there and if you did get that drunk at some point one of your teammates at the party would say" dude you were so trashed last night".
But the whole thing is unrealistic, college team has like 80 guys on the team, it would be impossible to be that disliked by everyone on the team, even douchebags have douchebag friends. It's more likely they weren't invited and was probably just Bo and his non football playing friends. Which I am not sure why it even became a point, if I turned 21 and my friends took me out and you found out no coworkers were there would people be shocked.
"Let us die young or let us live forever
We don't have the power but we never say never
He did have friends, I'm assuming, just none that were on the football team. And there is a chance that none of the 80 guys liked him. But there is also a chance that the other starters told the rest of the team that they weren't going and, just like on Draft Day, it tumbled down so that none of the players ended up going.
"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"
Yes, they went. Bo didn't want to tell Kevin Costner that they went because he didn't want to tell him about any of his bad sides or what happened that night. This is why Costner does not pick him, because he is not honest. While the 2 black guys are talking about fighting people, not having enough money and stuff like that. Bo was perfect all American. He didn't have any faults at all because he didn't reveal them. So Costner did not know what faults he had. But yes, he had friends. He was a really good guy, just fearful.
