It definitely could have worked and been cool. But they made the right call. Let's say they make her a major cast member, this early, now she has more pressure to be funny. She is great as a drop in character and she is becoming more and more of a big sis to Avery. If you make her main cast, it becomes less of a family and more of BFF show, and they have enough of those.
Also what if it goes bad? Then you have to replace her or make her fade away. Right now she fills a void of a Hot/Funny secondary character and she greatly helps the show, There are more than a few relatively unknown actresses , just as hot and/or funny , that would love to have that type of character on DWAB or any other show,
If Nikki leaves and goes on to bigger roles(whichl could happen) they can find a similar person, but change the name, or make a new Nikki. But she is free to leave the show as a recurring character. She can also do Nick shows as a one shot character, like Mary from See Dad Run was on GLC just to name one. That said I still think she might find out about Stan first. She isn't like Karl, And if she does, it could be a sign that is will stick around.
It could be a case of her getting offered a main cast role and declining it. But both sides stand more to lose if they made her more important and it doesn't work.It happens all the time. Pro Athlete is a backup, then gets in helps his team win the Super Bowl, gets a signed a big contract and is expected to put the team on his back and fails epically. The key is know the potential of failure vs payoff.
It might be better to have Nikki be sort of a secret weapon that your entire strategy.
