Okay, Ellen James is a barely supporting character in the John Irving novel "The World According to Garp," who was gang raped by a group of perverted men when she was eleven years old and had her tongue cut off so she wouldn't reveal her attackers. In protest of this atrocity, a group of militant feminists cut their own tongues off in order to show solidarity with the kid. These women are residents of a safe house run by T.S. Garp's mother, Jenny Fields.
There. Unless and until this message is deleted by the administrators, now you know why "Ellen James" isn't such a kid-friendly reference.
That's a plot hole that always bothered me in Garp. Cutting her tongue out may keep her quiet, but she could still reveal her attackers by writing down their names. It seems everyone forgot about an eleven year old being able to write.
Well, the kids may not get it, but we grown-ups sure would. Plus there's always the chance that they'd find it out as they grew up.
Also, if you want to talk about generations being soft, I still remember that self-proclaimed experts were lobbying Congress and insisting my generation was going to turn into a bunch of homicidal maniacs from everything we saw on TV. I still lack a criminal record.
