They are indeed a blended family, you are correct about that.
It seemed very clear to me that Tyler had the best chemistry with Stan, however, the writers kept putting up Avery / Stan centric episodes that seemed a bit forced. Overall I liked the show very much and I will miss it. share

Adam Hicks would have been the perfect Tyler since he looks like Bennett, and Chloe a lot more than Blake Michael does...

I don't think looks matter much for a show like this, this show has a very surreal feel to it. Not only does it feature a talking dog but everything about the production creates bizarre / zany scenarios that stretch what would be considered normal human interactions.
I loved Blake Michael's portrayal as the son. He is one of two actors who have actually won an award on this show. I normally find the portrayal of someone who is 'the stupid' character very annoying but he gave the character an air of like ability that I have not seen in similar portrayals. Also, he seemed to have a very good chemistry with Stan (or perhaps I should say the actor who did Stan's voice overs).
