TRIED AGAIN -- FAILED AGAIN -- but I want to understand

I've tried. I really have. I think this is the fourth Tyler Perry movie I've seen. I see stuff for free because I do "film critic" bits for a local radio morning show.

I saw DIARY...FAMILY REUNION...the serious one with Janet Jackson (forgot the name)...and now this one. The main reason I went was because I'm a Eugene Levy fan (SCTV, A Mighty Wind, American Pie franchise, etc.). He's a funny guy. He couldn't even save this film.

I just don't get the appeal. Perry's movies just aren't that well written. I know the guy is popular, but seriously...what's the appeal? When his flicks are serious, they feel like bad melodrama. When his flicks attempt humor, they feel like a bad sitcom written by committee.

I love comedies -- Monty Python stuff, Woody Allen films, Judd Apatow movies, Simpsons, Family Guy, SNL (on the TV side), even the Blake Edwards classics. But this stuff? Nothing clever about it. And without playing the "race" card, yeah -- I'm a white guy. But good writing is good writing regardless of skin color. And this is NOT good writing.

So please -- if you're a fan -- tell me why. I'm NOT trolling. I really want to understand. Is it the simplistic nature of the whole thing? The morality and religious aspects that Perry always seems to sneak in (sorry -- I never appreciate that stuff either)? The predictibility?

Just curious. Why do you think Tyler Perry is worthwhile?
