The end scene with the raindrop seem to indicate that they were living in a V Reality type of word that he created for them? Perhaps to place those that did not want to be around technology?

Who knows; your guess is as good as mine! Confusing ending which was a shame cuz I enjoyed the rest of it.

I thought he lived because they showed him with his eyes open at the end... I thought Evelyn was the one that died... Don't forget that at the end, we see some nanoparticles that are still alive
