Isn't this kind of the point of the film? Those people stopped it at nothing because they feared what they did not understand. Evelyn (or Eve!) understood at the end that Will wasn't 100% machine but really an evolved transcended mind trying to make things better. There was no evidence anywhere that he was going to harm anyone, except in the scene where RIFT was pointing guns at Evelyn. Even the combatants at the end who got whipped by the nano bots were not killed (they wake up in the end).
So in fact it was less evolved man who stopped at nothing to stop what it did not could not understand and that includes decimating countless lives by uploading a virus that would stop every system along with Will.
And why didn't Will want others to understand? Will was not some vulnerable E.T. who couldn't communicate, but rather many people here claim Will was smarter than anyone else on earth. Early on, when his close friend had concerns Will didn't care to address them early on or later, so instead of gaining an ally he loses his friend's trust. Will knew the people who shot him earlier would be violently after him again, so rather than be discrete & patient he immediately (illegally or legally?) makes ~$30million dollars in a single day under Evelyn's name. Why did he want to immediately flaunt his survival & financial success in front of Kate Mara's violent gang when he could have easily done it slowly, secretly & patiently? Then Will goes and builds his castle & starts his plans... why wouldn't he even tell Evelyn what his big "purifying" plans & nanobot-hive plans were for years? He expects her to blindly trust him, but he doesn't have to trust her? It's not surprising to see her turn on him later. That's not very smart of Will... unless his intentions were not so innocent & good. When Will invites his prior friends (who were once big supporters of PINN & transcending) to inspect his castle & plans he not only fails to convince them and earn their trust, but somehow makes things worse. What did he say & show them that we don't see in the movie that now made these scientists and once prior friends so worried that they want themselves & Evelyn to "run from this"? In the movie we don't see a single scientific or medical community/organization approve of Will's "miracles" - trusting only Will that his "miracles" are safe is not science - it's blind faith. To Will his changes are "purifying" the earth, to all the other scientists he is "polluting" it.
I find it interesting that some people ignore *all* the concerns of *all* the other scientists (many who were specialists with the transcending process & PINN) in the movie and solely trust one scientist(Will) as the new "benevolent god" as he *alone* redesigns the world putting his nanobots in the ground, the water (rain, lakes, etc), other humans, etc. Go ahead & drink his nanobot-infested water, after all you shouldn't fear what you don't understand, right? If only the less evolved man would passively submit to their new world overlord, his miracle promises & his new world design then no lives would be lost & that is all that is important... right?
