Whats americans obsession with their kids being able to pitch a baseball about or catch a football.

I only became aware of this preoccupation watching this film and realised I'd seen it in hundreds of films.

Is this the only way middle class fathers can connect with their children, helping their kids to develop a skill that they couldn't succeed at on a professional level.
